New Season

Well, it's the middle of April, and sad to say I've only been to my friend's private lake twice. The first time much earlier this month, I came home with 10 nice gills with a total weight of 5 pounds. Second time out, only caught 4 just last weekend. Could see the gills everywhere, but this time of the month they only have one thing on their minds. Looks like it's going to be a heavy bedding season. The fish I caught were all on what I call now the "spider grub". Again, it comes from the idea… Continue

First time for me:I caught a tagged brook Trout today 4-17 at about 8:15 am .I'm gonna send the tag into the hatchery .They'll send me back a certificate and award patch (ha ha, an award patch for an 11" trout..lol!)but I'm thrilled they'll enter me in a drawing for 1 of 12 rod and reel combos! That's cool! It's the "Hook a Winner "program. They 're tagging more than 1000 brook Trout for release in NJ waters.

14.25 inch crappie on 3 wt flyrod, my personal best.

Went fishing in central florida several days ago and caught 7 crappie and 2 gills. The largest crappie measured 14.25 inches. Its always such a thrill to catch em on a light flyrod. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me. All of the fish were caught using a 1.25 inch Mister Twister Exude Nymph (Moss Green/Pearl color) on a thin wire Gamakatsu hook and a sliding bead head weight. The oil in the skillet will be sizzling this weekend.

Doin' that Delaware Thing!

Had a good couple of days fishing in Sussex County, Delaware this week. Me and my buddy Charlie were fishing primarily for hickory shad, but we ran into a lot of other species to include redbreast and redear sunfish, white perch, yellow perch, bluegills, herring, bonus slab crappie and some surprise white shad up in the down-state tributaries and tidal creeks. For some reason, people don't bother too much with panfish… Continue

Use Live Bait & Make the Water Boil

There are so many titles for this live bait post that come to mind, I should start with a few titles. Rock Your Water With Live Bait. Match the Hatch- er Make the Hatch. Make the Fish in Front of You Go Mad. Loose Feed for Success. BlueGill Tsunami.

So those are some titles I would use to tell you about the top method for getting all the fish feeding in your area. Did I say all the fish? Yes. Even on a slow day, this method takes fish out of neutral or non-feeding behavior…

Bitzy pond minnow bait review

I used the strike king bitzy pond minnow, it works really well for trout, largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and smallmouth bass. I use it to fish bluegills, i threw it in in about 1 minuite of trolling it i got a bluegill then. I cast in about 5 feet off shore and within 3 to 4 sec another one bit on. Then guess what in about 18 sec after casting it another one. It works really well if you want to catch larger bluegills. a pic of it.… Continue

One of My Best Bluegill Fishing Days...Ever!

Wow! I just got back from fishing and as I speak we have a 'cool' front roaring through that is dropping temps from the upper 80's down to the low 50's tonight. But just a few hours ago it was warm and sunny and the previous 2 days had been record high low 90's. This pushed fish shallow and pre-spawn gills were just a cast away, staging out away from bedding sites. But they were quick to hit crystal braid jigs and hair jigs. Great, non-stop action for… Continue

Big Bluegill Sighting

I was taking a hike through a park yesterday with the woman, when we came to a pond (with a "no fishing" policy-which is fine) and walked out on to a small bridge. Along with a few turtles there were quite a few nice size gill's hovering about. I assume because people feed them, although there is a "no feeding" policy as well. I usually don't start fishing in earnest until May here in northern Ohio because I haven't had that much luck going any earlier. This has got me wondering if the warm…

Hair Jigs for Gills and Slabs

Been having a ball lately with 8 to 10 inch gills and 12 to 14 inch crappies on Pink Things and the newer chartreuse braids I tie. Both at 1/64 th oz, but some thread - bodied 1/100 th oz jigs fishes below a sensitive Thill Stealth float and wind drifted at the local pond.

Nice, pre-spawn gills are giving me action. But today I concentrated on crappie, just to… Continue

Taking out bluegill 2 at a time

Next time if you ever find your self catching a lot of bluegill in a very short amount of time try putting 3 hooks at once. The set up i do is i have a small bass sinker at the bottom. USing 6 pound test line, then about 12" up i have a #10 hook then 7" up another # 10 hook then another 7" up i tie another hook on. Baited with wax worms. Sometimes i catch a fish on all three of my hooks but that is kind of hard to reel in with 3 different gill swimmin in different directions.

Interesting Baits

Hey has anyone caught any bluegills on some intereesting baits. I caught a bluegill on a Crunch bar wrapper once before. and i caught one on accident i hooked it on the fin. One time i even caught a spinnerbait that someone lost in the water.
