Over the past few years, I've developed a deep passion for trophy panfish angling. Initially, it was a challenge to transition from using baitcasting setups for bass to focusing on catching trophy pan fishing. Ultra-light to micro-light spinning setups were now the norm. The smaller the bait I used, the more trophy master angler fish I was able to tag. It soon became clear that using smaller baits was the key to success in my pursuit of trophies.

…

So, I decided to shelve the baitcasting setups altogether and instead put together microlight spinning rigs. These rigs allowed me to cast tiny jigs and slip float systems over long distances. And let me tell you, the effort paid off! The trophies started pouring in. It turns out that lighter and smaller setups were the way to go. Not only did I catch more panfish trophies, but I also started reeling in larger gamefish like largemouth and smallmouth bass, as well as channel cats.

As I continued to explore different angling techniques, bait finesse systems caught my attention. Currently, I own a Kast King Zephyr BFS reel and three rods, all of which are marketed in Asia as bfs spec rods capable of handling baits as light as 0.6 grams. Surprisingly, the two lightest rods, priced at $20.00 and $40.00, have exceeded my expectations with a fun factor performance score of 4 to 5 stars out of 5. These rods are perfect for slip floating casting at distances of up to 80 feet with floats/splitshot as little as 4.5 grams.

One rod that stands out basically as a UL bass finesse is the Shimano Sensilite 7-foot rod, priced at around $40 to $50. It offers specifications comparable to the highly recommended Dobbs BFS-rated rod, which costs around $200. Looking at the bargain, I chose the Shimano rod and it has proven to be a perfect ultra-light bass fishing combo. I've had great success using Ned rig jigs weighing 1/16 ounce for fun battles with smallmouth bass. The fun factor is definitely a solid 5!

Down to Olney Illinois for one and we worrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre that place out .....we caught mmmmmmany gills and crappies down there over a 25 year history.

Then we switched to Iowa , there were no limits there when we started fishing there. Now there are limits everywhere we went in the old days... Partly our own faults I guess... I know of lots of guys who caught lots more fish than we did , but that's not an excuse of course , just saying weren't the only ones catching tons of fish..
Now I fish ponds mostly , no boat to mess with , of my own. I also fish with a new old partner Joe Leopold , my cousin who owns a
17 FOOT LUND ....... a very comfortable to boat to fish from...... He's a great friend and of course a good fisherman to boot.

Back to PA #1 , DOUG and I spent every summer fishing together and never regretted it once..... he used to make me laugh alot at some of his sayings and so forth. we had a great time fishing together for over 25 years . I miss him a lot ......
I MADE HIM A FLY ROD ONE TIME , AND I LATER GOT IT BACK FROM HIM WHEN HE WAS TOO SICK TO USE IT. I TREASURE THAT ROD AND THE TIME I HAD WITH DOUG.. I SPOSE HE'S AN A POND SHORE LINE, RIGHT NOW WITH A LAWN CHAIR SITTING THERE WITH IN THE BIG POND IN THE SKY....AT LEAST I HOPE THIS IS SO..... SEE YA ONE OF THESE DAYS DOUG, YOU WERE A PAL AND A FRIEND LIKE NO OTHER....
TOOTY
MY FIRST EVER CRAPPY!tag:bigbluegill.ning.com,2021-04-24:2036984:BlogPost:9067982021-04-24T17:27:58.000ZJose mejiahttps://bigbluegill.ning.com/profile/Mejia

Last weekend I had the opportunity to go back home for a few days and spend time with my familly. The fiance came with me and we decided we wanted to go fishing. Once we got home we spent the night with my older brother Carlos and had asome fun. The next morning I woke up my little brother early in the morning and the three of us (including my fiance) went up to pyramid lake in California to do some fishing. We wernt species specific but we did hear that they had stocked with trout a few days prior so I made sure we had an ultralight or 2 just incase the trout bite picked up. We got to the lake at about 6 am and went in with out having to wait to long in line. Our first location sammy (little brother) wanted to try his luck with a small swim bait tipped with some corn to see if a trout would chase it. He got a big surprise when instead he pulled out a 1 1/2 lb cat from the weeds! Sadly I forgot to take pictures before releasing the cat back into the water. 30 minutes pass with no bite so we head on out for a difrnt area. On the way there we pass a small dock where they keep the rentals on the lake. As I looked a bit more closely I saw a bluegill had decided to make a bed right at the waters edge. Using the knowledge this sight has taught me I looked around and low and behold, there was several beds in the area in between the weeds. Excitedly I told ashly (fiance) and sammy to get the ultralights ready. Sammy caught 2 himself and ashly caught 1. It was there first time catching a bluegill and ashlys first freshwater fish ever! All in all it was a great trip and my little brother made my day by saying that was one of his most favorite fishing days ever!

Last year I used a leaf rake and went around the entire pond, a week later you couldn't tell it. This year I had three feet of algae around the edge and islands of it here and there in the middle. I decided to start a pond dye treatment. I did it two weeks ago with plans to do it eight weeks later and start again in the next spring. A few days after the treatment it came a half inch rain, I went to look at the pond and the algae was gone. It's been a week and a half and it hasn't floated back up yet. My question is, was it the dye or just the rain and will it float back up and return ?

SQUIRREL TAIL JIGS

I have been fishing simple Squirrel Tail Jigs since November 2009 and although I haven't counted the number of fish they have caught ,let's just say scores of fish !August 2017 I fished them consistently and reawakened the realization of how well these little guys attract many species of Fish. Examples of a large variety of species have been caught on 1/8th ,16th and 32nd oz. Jigs .I tie them up usually with Black /Yellow eyed Ball head Jigs ,using Red , Black ,Grey or Brown thread. White head /Black eyed Jigs work well too. I plan on targeting Smallmouths and Walleyes with 1/4 oz .versions before the year 2017 is out .

Squirrel Tail " breathes " ,leech like in the water and it's that quality that makes them so attractive to fish . I am up to 12 species of fish caught on UN-TIPPED Squirrel Tail Jigs.; Pumpkin Seed,Blue Gill, Green Sunfish ,LM Bass,Yellow Bullhead, Chain Pickerel ,White Perch,Yellow Perch ,Crappie ,Chub, Fathead minnow and Channel Catfish . Rainbow Trout( and most of the other species mentioned) have been caught tipping with a 1" Gulp Minnow and Channel Cats tipping with a 2" Twister Tail .Of course tipping with a Night Crawler Chunk is killer and is an economical way to use the bait. Walleye's , Smallmouths and Red Breasted Sunfish I am sure will hit them so I am aiming for 15 species at least on an un-tipped Squirrel Tail. I have managed a Smallmouth on a 1/4 oz. Squirrel Tail Jig /4"Keitech Easy Shiner Combo and several Red Breasted Sunfish tipping with a Crawler piece. Got a Crappie on a 16th oz. Spinner bait that got the feathers knocked off it that I tied a clump of ST to. Anxious to try the ST Jig with Spinner harness as well. And when the waters low I intend using tandem ST's as that is when the Tandem has worked best for me.

Worked slowly and steady near bottom they are devastating on Yellow Perch around Rip Rap, Dams ,incoming streams and inflow Pipes . The White Perch seem to be more attracted to a swimming twitching faster presentation and I have taken many 9-10" Whites without tipping the ST Jig. A moderate retrieve with pulsing twitches up in the column for following Fish works a charm too when the water warms up . A slow swimming or falling presentation around Prime fish structure can be just what a Lunker Largemouth or Channel Cat won't resist . Many 12"-15" class Crappie from shore fishing them around inflow pipes have been caught and seem to take most often when the jig is falling in the column. The Bluegills and the Pumpkinseeds as well as hybrid PSXBG seem to demand the crawler chunk more than the other fish but if they are worked up or particularly aggressive they take an un- tipped ST in 32 oz. or smaller size.

I am intending to archive fish catches 12 months of the year but may have to tip with bait more consistently or tie smaller than 32nd oz. during Cold Water periods .
First time trying ST's through the ice 2018: This 17" White Catfish took a 64th oz. ST Jig tipped with a Live Fathead Minnow after catching about 15 Perch with the same set up.

MEPPS: "We've tried hundreds of other natural and synthetic materials; bear hair, fox, coyote, badger, skunk, deer, even Angus cow, but nothing works as well as squirrel tail hair. We've been recycling squirrel tails for over half a century. In fact, we recycle more of them than anyone else in the world. The fact is squirrel tails are all hair—no fur. Practically all other animals have fur tails with just a few guard hairs. Fur doesn't have the rippling, pulsating movement of squirrel hair in the water."

I am trying to get educated on the matter .Any help would be appreciated ! Below is the Cupsaw Lake bulletin regarding Algae treatment. Thanks ,John

Good morning!
The lake will be treated today this morning with copper and Pond Shade Aqua Blue. The treatment will begin in the deep area, near the dam. It should reach the shallow area about 2 hours after that, at which time we recommend no swimming for 2 hours. By this time, it should be close to 12:00 when lessons are done for today and we are heading to Erskine to cheer on our swimmers in the Championship Meet! Below is the information on this treatment.

If you have any questions on this treatment, please contact Alan Fedeli, environmentalcommittee@cupsawlake.org or any member of the environmental committee.

Copper Sulfate Treatment

We will be treating with Copper Sulfate via fan boat today. This is our traditional treatment that we have done every year to reduce the algae population to prevent a blue-green algae bloom. Swimming is not restricted, but we typically keep swimmers out of the water for an hour or two after the shallow water is treated.

What is copper sulfate?

Copper sulfate is an inorganic compound that combines sulfur with copper. It can kill bacteria, algae, roots, plants, snails, and fungi. The toxicity of copper sulfate depends on the copper content. Copper is an essential mineral. It can be found in the environment, foods, and water. Copper sulfate has been registered for use in pesticide products in the United States since 1956.

How does copper sulfate work?
Copper in copper sulfate binds to proteins in fungi and algae. This damages the cells causing them to leak and die. In snails, copper disrupts the normal function of the skin cells and enzymes.

The blue dye product is Pond Shade Aqua Blue, it is food grade and safe for humans and animals, and it can be seen at Upper Erskine where they have used it for six years. It creates a blue surface film that blocks UV rays and reduces the sunlight that algae need to bloom. This treatment is expected to reduce the number and frequency of copper sulfate treatments we will need for the rest of the swim season.

Total of 13 species in the vicinity of Amelia, VA and Petersburg, VA. I'm fairly…
