Finally moved into the new house

Moved into the new location (Western Maryland) last weekend.  I've had a chance to fish my 1/4 acre pond about 3 times so far.  I haven't been able to locate my tackle box yet, so all I've been fishing with are small meps spinners.

The bass are biting, but nothing larger than 14".  I've caught two healthy bluegills, but nothing to write home about.  I'll take pictures of the fish whenever the phone finally sends them to my email.

Problems with the pond appear…

My McGinty Wet

I am going to post my recipe for "My McGinty Wet" . More creativaty went in to the fly than the name. This is a very effective fly. This summer I used it to catch 25 Gills in an hour and a half. I have caught a lot of fish on this fly through the spring and summer last year and this year. The fly is not weighted so it rides just below the surface (where i usually fish it)…

New Personal Best Hybrid Sunfish!

Well...what can I say...today was actually a really slow day, except for all the very small and stunted largemouth bass that were hitting anything and everything I threw at them. I saw Tonys' major-league Hybrids last night, looked at them again this morning, and said that's it...I'm going fishin'. Maybe I'll get lucky!!

So, after 90 minutes and no hybrids on the bank,…

Arkansas River 10/24

Well, Keystone Dam released some water yesterday, and sure enough, there was a good bit of water coming downriver when I got to my spot.  I walked down the emergency boat ramp and saw two swarms of seagulls diving on bait in the water; good signs.

I get out there, and a gent I know catches three before I can get a line in the water.  Started out with a Powerbait swimshad, and managed to catch a small Sandie on that.  Then, after seeing a bunch of fish hit top, I switched over to a…

Nice Fall Morning for Fishing

Let the sun come up this morning to knock the chill off before leaving to test the waters.  Took my fishfinder with me since most of my shallow spots that have been holding fish are not producing since the temps have dropped.  Decided to troll a spoon tipped with a curly tail grub as this has produced well in this little lake in the past.  I had paddled into some water that was 15 ft deep and started seeing fish and balls of bait fish on my finder.  The spoon did it's job and instantly found…

Any and all your Favorite Fish Recieps

Well most who know me also know that I'm moving to the UP in April to Retire and fish.

I would like to expand my taste and try recipes that you are all using across the land. I know that having spent most of my fish eating days in Northern Indiana ,Northern Wisconsin and Canada,  I have missed out on some very good ways to prepare fish.

So if you would please share you favorite with me and the others. I promise that I will try  a new recipe each week.

Fall Break fishing with the kids

Took a few days off since the kids were out of school for fall break and we took the opportunity to fish at a friend's private lake.  We have had the opportunity to fish here before as he always invites us for spring break and fall break.  The fishing here is great this time of year as the summer crowd of campers have left and all is quiet from ski boats and jet skies.  The lake has some huge crappie and in the past we have done well with minnows.   We headed out this morning to get some…

Touch of Fall

Launched my kayak at dawn this morning and noticed the cooler temps in the air and water as I waded out to settle in for a little paddle to my favorite spot. tested the top water bite with a popper and caught a few of these.  Not much size but they were hitting it aggressively, so I continued to fish the popper.  Always hard to change to another fly if your getting hits even…

11 at my local ponds tonight

I got 11 at my local ponds tonight. Could've done more, maybe, but I forgot to bring a light and the last fish swallowed the hook deep and I had to cut it off. It was too dark to see to tie on another and the moon wasn't high enough in the sky yet to use that :p

None bigger than 6 inches - these ponds that seemed just about devoid of fish 2 years ago are now jammed full of aggressive, small BG and there also seems to have been a bumper crop spawn of LMB this year ; 3-5 inch baby…

NEW GRONAW GRASS SHRIMP PATTERNS

I have been trying to tweek some new grass shrimp jigs for fall and early winter fishing that will soon be upon us. here are a few of my latest variations... The jigs on the left are larger, 1/16th oz and the body is brown pearl core braid, with white and brown marabou for the tail...a little bigger offering in the traditional brown/olive shrimp patterns that Jeffrey had…

The cat's meow

Was able to take a Friday off of work and what better way to spend it than on the water.  Temps have been in the low fifties at nights with daytime highs in the low eighties so water temps have dropped some making the urge to wet a fly strong.  Tied up some bead eyed dragon fly nymphs in this color pattern to see how they would work.…

Arkanss River 9/17 Zebra Mussels!

Headed out this morning, first full day of my 2-week vacation.  I had three goals that I wanted to accomplish today:

1)       Catch some minnows to take home for use as bait.

2)      Catch some Shad, again, for bait.

3)      Catch some Skipjack, to process into cut bait for catfish.

I knew it was going to be LOW, as I’ve been watching the level on the internet.

BOY, was it low! I haven’t seen it this low in awhile.  Walking out, I…

Arkansas River, Keystone Dam

I decided to go up to Keystone Dam and throw out some of the cut Skipjack Herring I have, and see if any cats were feeling hungry.  I didn’t know how the bite was going to be, as there was no water moving, and we had a cold front come through the day before.

I rigged and baited one of my surf rods.  I tossed that bait up near the turbines, and set the clicker.  I then baited up a smaller rod that had a float rig on it.  I knew from previous experience that I can at least play…
