My Favorite Bluegill rig

I'm new to the website and just wanted to add my 2 cents. By accident I've discovered a very effective rig to catch bluegills with. I slide a tiny bead head weight onto my 3 wt flyline, then I tie on a Gamakatsu C13U Keel Balance Hook #10. I then thread on a Mister Twister 1.23" Exude Nymph (Moss Green/Pearl color). I guess the gills think its a grass shrimp. Works for me. The hook is a very thin wire hook and makes it easy to remove from the fish.… Continue

Flies for Bluegill

Started fly fishing early this summer, to get in some casting practice I would slip off to a small pond and ended up catching a few Bluegills. Started off with trout in mind but now I am not sure I am not having more fun fishing for Bluegills. Am I alone in this???

Caught 26!!

I work at one of the Georgia State hospitals. This particular facility has a nice 3 acre pond on the premises and I never took it seriously until last Saturday. I had to work, and decided to pick up a container of wigglers on the way in. I figured what the heck, I'll give it a try when I get off about 4:00 P.M. Well, to my surprise, I started catching some nice gills in the 7" to 9" range. I was fishing from the bank and flipping bait around 10' out. It seemed on every cast, I was getting hit.… Continue

Finally Back

After about a month of no gill fishing finally got out this to and had personal best day. Wind was blowing 20 to 25 knots all day. Pretty cold for florida. I guess cold turned them on. Here some pics.

Carp, walleye, smallmouth bass....bluegill!

Periodically we see the fishing media try to direct us to the new "in" fish. Carp have seen a resurgence, walleye started having their own tournaments, smallies had multitudes of stories written about them.

Now it's the bluegill's turn!

Bluegill have it all.

Catchability.

Eatibility.

Trophyability...(might not be a REAL word)

Enjoyable for all ages.

I just wanted to say thank you for the surpreme effort by all on this… Continue

Finally got out!

I finally got out to one of the local fishing spots for around an hour yesterday. Was throwing a black and chartreuse 1" curltail. Ended up with two 7" crappie and 4 7-8" gills. Not big, but great when fried up whole. On the way back to the car, I ran into the local game warden. He noticed the size of the fish and I told him that I couldn't catch anything bigger. He told me that it was okay to take these fish, as the lake has many stunted gills and crappie, and that I was doing the right thing.… Continue

I Pledge To Re-Read The Rules Every Now And Then

In fact, I’m going to go over them right now so I will have a clear understanding of what ya’ll should expect from me. I promise to abide by the rules, and enjoy it!

I pledge not to cross the line, although I’m not too sure I’ll pledge to stay in line. I got a paddling at school in the 1rst grade for that. It was the after lunch, back to class line. I was in it, it started moving and I went with it all the way back to the classroom and sat down in my desk just like we’d… Continue

Fished A New Pond on Friday

Hey guys and gals, I got to fish yet another new pond this past Friday. Actually the pond was drained about 6 years ago and dug out and restocked with bass, gills, channel cats and some hybrid stripers. I had fished the same pond back in the early 1990's and it was fabulous at that time, producing several 7 to 9 pound bass and my personal best bluegill of 11 3/4 inches.

My buddy Loren and I fished it and he got some nice eater-sized channel cats to 20 inches and we caught bass to 18… Continue

Any other 'gillgetters from New England?

Where I'm from (SE Massachusetts), Bluegill aren't a very sought after species of fish. Most anglers around here are Striper fanatics. I spend the vast majority of my time fishing the sweetwater for Bass, Panfish, and Trout from the comfort of my Ocean Kayak.

I'm curious to know if there are any other members from the New England area.

Bethany Reservoir (California) 'gills

Fished Bethany Reservoir (California Delta) yesterday, with my wife and kids.

We started off at Clifton Court Forebay in the early afternoon, but it was really windy and we were getting no action except slimy weeds. Not much fun for me, and even less so for the little ones. We'd never been out to the Delta to fish before, and were considering heading over to Los Vaqueros when the guy catfishing next to us suggested nearby Bethany reservoir and said a good bluegill bite was going on… Continue

'Gillin on vanduse lake-9/7/09

Went fishing on Vanduse lake near Jacobson, Mn. on Monday and had a great afternoon. Me and my kids caught several gills in the 6"-8" range and some nice crappie and bass. All of the fish were hanging out in the middle of the lake just off an exposed weed hump were the water dropped from about 9' down to 14' in a boat length. A 2" pumpkinseed Gulp minnow grub fished on a plain 1/16th oz. jig out-produced all other bait including crawlers! I was very impressed with the production I got out of… Continue

How To Help Beginner Anglers

It is very rewarding to see the excitement on a new anglers face, young or old, when they catch their first fish. The history of this excitement can be traced all the way to the caveman days when the children were taught by their elders how to gather food and catch fish. When the child caught their first fish, I am sure that they were welcomed back at their dwelling with smiles and admiration.

The reason why the size of the fish is… Continue

Stunted Growth

Today, befor I went to college I had a few hrs. on my hands so I went fishing. I had fished this pond befor and cought some big cat fish and some huge bass. No one ever fishes this pond because it's right in front of a fitness gym, but I do. So today I thought I would try out some blugill fishing. I had my fly rod and my gillrod with worms. I was catching them left and right but they were all about the same size 4 to 5 inchs only. So I thought some… Continue

Old Bald Guy

Old Bald Guy.

That was his Big Bluegill name. It was also his name on the NEFGA forum that I frequent.

He was also Rog Flanders, but for my purposes here, he's going by OBG.

OBG passed away this week. My tears have finally cleared enough to see this computer screen so I can make a humble attempt to write how I feel about him.

OBG was a true bluegill lover. He also loved people. And he loved people who loved bluegill. OBG loved his family, and the… Continue

Hello All

Hello guys and girls. I have just found this forum and I was interested enough to join. I love to fish for bluegill more than any other fish. Its like you can catch them right off the dock where theres like hundreds of them with just a simple jig or worm. You don't need any special equipment or skills. I am considering to get one of those cane poles they sell at our walmart just to have a bit more fun. Well I just thought I'd introduce myself to you....So hi and goodbye for now!!
