July 4 Holiday Week - 2018

We had a blast with a bunch of late spawning gills over the 4th of July holiday here in northern Michigan. The fish were in bedding areas in 4 to 5 feet of water and were very aggressive. Several came on Bully Spiders on the fly rod. …

Did the pond dye do it ?

Back in 2012 I had a 5/8 acre pond dug. About one forth of it is ten feet deep, the rest tapers off to nothing. After a couple years the algae started growing. Last year I used a leaf rake and went around the entire pond, a week later you couldn't tell it. This year I had three feet of algae around the edge and islands of it here and there in the middle. I decided to start a pond dye treatment. I did it two weeks ago with plans to do it eight weeks later and start again in the next spring. A…

Bottom Aeration or water pump and fountain type?
I have 2 ponds both about 1 acre.

Considering using solar panels to power pump or compressor.

Peoples thoughts are appreciated.

Cracking the code on Pratt Lake

20170717- I’m considering adding another local lake to my hit list. On two separate trips the past couple days I’ve done some reconnaissance and contour mapping. 10 year history and Back ground check reveals a thin history of trophy B.Gills with one breaking the eleven inch mark… certainly raised my eyebrow a…

Appomattox River

I've got this one spot along the Appomattox River where I have caught an incredible amount of different species of fish. They are: Largemouth Bass, Spotted Bass, Bluegill, Redbreast Sunfish, Walleye, White Perch, Chain Pickerel, Channel Catfish, White Catfish, and Yellow Perch. That's an incredible 10 species at just one spot! Further downstream I have also caught Fallfish, Smallmouth Bass, and Bluehead Chub. Total of 13 species in the vicinity of Amelia, VA and Petersburg, VA. I'm fairly… Continue

Catching fish with physics and geometry

So, a fish story, My brother Larry is over from North Carolina for our annual fishing trip and we decide to run over to Kentucky Lake the first day. So, we start looking for Crappie and that's pretty slow so we begin to look for some bluegill. He is throwing a 1/32 oz jig and we are catching a few. I decide to throw a pink bluegill slider on a 1/16 oz roadrunner head. We are both picking up one here and one there when I make a cast next to a stickup and get a nice thump. I set the hook and…

Tips for fishing

I need some help on fishing for Bluegills here in Minnesota.  I used to fish alot as a kid but never really paid attention to what we were doing (dad always knew where to go and what to use).  I'm mainly looking for help on depths the where they might be during the season.  Right now where would they be found.  How much would change in June, July and fall.  I have  kids who want to catch fish but usually end up seeing a frustrated dad instead, I'm afraid they will lose interest.  I grew up…

Ice Fishing and Me...

Due to an automobile accident I do not currently do much outside in the cold as it is somewhat painful with pins in the ankle. This being said with the advance in winter fishing gear I am thinking of trying it maybe though a guided service. But who knows still watching our pennies.

2 lbs. Sufix Nanobraid Report

A few weeks ago, I posted the math related to calculating just how much line is needed to fill a reel spool (of  known dimensions) to a desired depth and in doing so, determined that it takes one heck of a lot of line if its diameter is .001". This is what Sufix claims for its 2 lbs. Nanobraid. If one converts the millimeter measurement Sufix also provides to inches, it is a bit closer to .002" as I recall. Still, it is incredibly small for a true braided line.

Anyway, I have fished…

St. Croix surprise

Decided to hit up the river for some panfish action since I've never really targeted panfish on this body of water before. Being a flowing body of water, I headed for some still backwaters. I first hit the marina but no panfish. I head further to a more secluded and quiet backwater that is 6' deep at the time. To get here, you gotta cross through 2' shallow sand bars. Once there, I start at the end of the backwater and work out. Right away I picked up some 5"-6" bluegills in 2' of water…

Fished another West Point lake today - what a difference a day makes!

Tuesday was mediocre as far as fishing goes, with only 28 caught of the usual species: largemouth, sunfish, perch and crappie. But Wed. on a different lake was like night and day! The weather was different : overcast with sprinkles vs. sunny; the lakes were much different: the previous lake is much larger and deeper with miles of wetlands; the lake yesterday 25' shallower with no wetlands but with a rip rap dam at one end and a long steep bank with overhangs.

Both lakes have produced…
