I am not really a bluegill fisherman per-say but I have caught my fair share of bluegills in my life. The biggest bluegill I have ever caught was an 11.75" malel at wagon train last year. Went out to Wildwood a couple weeks ago to fish for catfish, and every cat fisherman has to fish for bait. I have fished there a lot for bait and have caught a few of…

So up to today I have had to have unexpected surgery on my wrist which will prevent me from fishing until fall. The good news here, I have health insurance.
Last week or so, we had all the rain and it turned a little creek (2" deep) into a 5' river. This in turn flooded my house. Good news, kids safe and I have minimal damage. Mold is the only looming concern.
This river though, it filled my pond up. Thats great since I had drained it and killed off the…

After seeing Bruce and Teeg and Josh and others with all those big hybrid sunfish posted up I decided to check my local hybrid factory, a 2 acre pond about 25 miles south of me, to see if I could catch a few good ones. The pond owner said that they hadn't had much luck with them so far this spring, but I didn't let that bother me too much. Last October I had taken a GSF x BG here that measured 12 inches,,,the first 12 inch sunfish, of any kind, I had taken in my home, or local, waters. So I…

Went to check one of my favorite lakes this evening as we had some flooding a couple of weeks ago. Lake level was up three ft but that didn't keep me from finding some of my marked bedding spots. Paddled back to a nice shallow flat where the water was about 5ft, The water had cleared up a lot so I was able to see the nice stretch of craters well before I was on them. Distanced my kayak several feet away and rolled out a cast with a popper dropper rig. Slurp!!! Mr. Bluegill was home. …

The sun has set on May 2013 but not until it went down in history as one of the best May's I've ever had.....traditionally I package my summer vacation every year around the Full moon in June and that is no different this year.......The quality of this year's gills has been better than this time last year.....actually it was 2008 the last time I saw this type of quality....I know Mount Rushmore only has four famous people on it but I couldn't narrow my favorite gills down that far from last…

I have gained access to a small 1/2 to 3/4 acre subdivision pond that is loaded with small gills 3-5 inches, and a few good ones as well. There are also some hybrid gills, green sunfish, channel cats, bullheads, and bass in this pond. Out from the dam the water is about 10 feet deep. It very rarely gets any fishing pressure to help control the gill population. I have only seen one man and a small boy ever fish it other than my wife and myself. The bass seem to be in all size ranges, with…

As president of www.bigbluegill.com, I'd like to post some photos of high quality taxidermy involving bluegill, redear sunfish, pumpkinseed sunfish, and other related lepomids. I will accept submission of taxidermy efforts from taxidermists and anglers who own high quality bluegill or other sunfish mounts. Please have patience with me. If you send me a photo on this page, it could take me a week or two to post the photo. Because of the high value…

Whether we're fishing at the salt or in the fresh water, there's always some kind of live notification via the web system, indicating how contaminated the water may be for body-to-water contact. Just sharing with you something that you may like to keep for reference, when you decide to take your family to a freshwater/saltwater beach. The site covers the entire coastal region of the US. Sorry folks, but agencies within the inland states are not providing much info for the system to be…

I had the good fortune to trick a really nice Bluegill / Green Sunfish Hybrid over the weekend here in Nebraska at a certain private body of water.
The water was clear enough that I spotted the fish, and thought, "that guy looks pretty big."
I cast my fly near him and he inspected it but then refused it. I worked him for a while before a small…
