Thanks for the comment David. I've been thinking of putting a depth finder on my kayak, gets tough finding fish in the colder months without one. I tried the nightcrawler on jighead tactic a few days ago and had a couple nibbles but that's about it. I'll keep at it and see what happens.
Jason I add worm to jig heads, too. I tend to go with black or white jigs, for simplicity. All colors end up looking like one of these, anyway, once in the water.
I do suggest the jigs are essentially a vertical presentation when fished this way. I dont get far trying to cast and retrieve them....
This is especially effective under a float, 3 to 6 ft down, depending on the situation. The jig head is primarily an anchoring point for the bait, fish frree-lining it can get to a required depth quickly. I like nickle and gold headed jigheads in dark waters, but have had good success with pink, white or black. I often tip my grass shrimp jigs with some kind of bait. The sparkle braided body or the rubber legs attract the fish, then the bait seals the deal.
I think Jim Gronaw, use that setup alot
This thread reminds me of a story by my favorite, outdoor comedy author.....Anybody here ever read "The Grasshopper Trap", by Patrick McManus???
Actually, anything by McManus will resonate well with an angler, or outdoorsman/woman.... check his work out!
I'll have to recall that come July/August when I see them again.Come to think of it I have a little long handled tightly woven net I found at the stream one day.I'll use that .
