Not losing Fish with right Gear and Technique

The thought that made me think of starting this interactive group was losing fish and why it happens . Many reasons I suppose but sometimes the gear itself doesn''t match up to the task and blaming yourself isn't always fair .  Also lengthy casts are great to cover water but perhaps harder to get a good hookset with that much line out to the fish ,especially with stretch in mono which I use . So figuring a max distance for casting that still is a safe distance from spooking fish but a better…See More

Slip Float Lessons, Relearned

I have been doing some slip-floating lately. One morning I just decided to stop by BJ's bait supply and get me some of his extra fine red worms. In my kit were various slip floats, hooks and small split shot. I was in business, and the fly rod stayed in the car.

I re-learned that long floats and teeny rigs are definitely out, for me. The best floats for my use are stout 2" models, with a single 3/0 shot to balance them. These cast like bullets, and they don't have long, dangly stems…

Improving a Popper

Using poppers with a fly rod is pretty much a standard, but casting these flies can be awkward. The popper is light, relatively bulky, and usually festooned with feathers. This combination catches air and causes drag on the popper on the cast. The net effect is to hinder both control and distance. To remedy this, try this trick:

Drill a small hole in the belly of the popper, right at the center of gravity. Insert a small BB, or buckshot. Drilling the hole just undersize ensures the…

I think there are advantages and disadvantages to slip floats. Slip floats don't show the "up bite" as well as a fixed float. And I also agree about the wind as well. When it's windy I prefer a longer stem below the waters surface and that were I prefer to tie my line. The thill floats are all pretty decent for the money. I always remove the spring and use surgical tubing and a rubber band in the groove. Does not cause as much damage to your line

Swung through your are this morning; went the 20/95 route coming back from Atlanta as I visited an Aunt in Conyers. Lot of really good looking water along that stretch of 20.

Hello. I joined the site then got real busy and forgot about it. My passion is fly fishing for pan fish, mainly Blue Gills. My main fishing ground is Clarks hill lake, Savannah River, and local ponds. Nice to meet you

"I've got a bunch of those paper thin ones too, mostly Luhr Jensen "Manastees" I'd like to try a three way swivel, with a Helldiver low, and a flutter spoon high. Hopefully I can get the chance."...SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT TANDEM IDEA ,BUT DO YOU MEAN HELLDIVER OR HELLBENDER?

Hutton spoons Haha , I have a very paper thin ,light one about 2,3/4 "  I can trying split shotting .The name and connection hit me just now so I sent you the link .I've never caught on the Hutton spoon ,I have only tried once before I think .It's perhaps a trolling spoon gotten down with a weight ,but flutter spoons that can be casted with wind at the back can be productive as casting spoons on light line .Tipped with a piece of crawler ,very enticing to fish and the extra weight aids in casting and better than using a shot .
