I like to use a black Marker when using braid and color a 3 foot length.Not sure if I'll always do this as some conditions probably call for a flouro leader .I do have trouble bait casting braid at times but dont usually have problems with mono on a baitcaster  .I need to work with Braid more .My usual uses of Baitcaster /Braid is either vertical jigging or snapping spoons or trolling relatively deep water 20 or more -13' or heavy weeds/pads in the shallows . Spinning rods and 6-10 # test usually get the nod if most of my fishing is shallower than 13 '. I am interested in other experiences from you other obsessive Fisherman .Tight Lines !

Because Lake Murray is a power generating impoundment, the water levels fluctuate. Right now its down five feet or so, meaning much of the shore weed is dried out.
The large fields of lily pads and standing weeds found on stable natural lakes are not the norm.
The weeds I see come as forests of elodea ( I think its called), clingy green stuff, and subsurface clumps, and outcroppings, of grasses. SO we target them a bit differently

That is some great hardware you got going there Kelly! I think along the same lines as you… shorter rods for sensitivity and feel… I have a short 4’ Diawa SpinMatic with a Pflueger Trion GX120…very small...my personal findings is that going longer in the rods does not guarantee a longer cast when it comes to micro-jigging. What needs to be accounted for is the drag on the line across the extra guides and rod blank on the cast.

I love the 4’ rod very versatile when it comes casting and also vertical jigging.

I have absolutely no problem making the cast with them 4’ to 6’ rods make up my arsenal.

When it comes to GLISS it is the thickest line for me when micro-jigging and it is the strongest overall. When I meant by extreme is it is the thickest line I will use in my methods. It is the largest diameter of line but is very impressive keeping slightly behind the 4# Nanofil or 2# Nanobraid in cast length. I do appreciate the occasional lunker pred when battled on this set-up for its extra line strength.

That should have read .0025 for diameter and since it’s braided much stronger than rated. Haven’t lost any fish with it but no toothy fish have grabbed my little jig yet.

The strength of Gliss is phenomenal, but so is 5# Power Pro, I’ve yet to break either. Be careful when trying-don’t use bare hands!

Castability is great but really can’t tell if it’s any better than the Nanofil or the 2# mono or the 1# ice braid. All cast well but the Gliss is larger-more noticeable.

This year i’ve Changed my rod and reel setups. All reels are the smallest I can find. Either Pflueger President XT 20 weighing 5.6 ounces or Shimano Soare C14+ 500s weighing 4.9 ounces.

My rods are all small ultralights, all carbon with the longest 5’3” weighing 3.5 ounces and the shortest 3’9” weighing 1.8 ounces. They are all designed to throw the lightest jigs possible, 1/64 ounce and lighter. All are what I call whippy, that meaning very soft, flexible tip so I can load the tip with just a flick of the wrist.

Frankly casting distance is not one of my criteria. All will throw it farther than I want. IMO when you have a lot of line out you lose contact with these little jigs and the bottom(braided line floats)(one of the reasons why I’m using more mono because it sinks) I prefer fishing 20-40 feet from me when “long casting”.

… i always had a personal battle with Trilene and Stren... i used to have bulk spools of both.

David… I actually had to go down the basement and check to see what I had at the end of my fly line… I used the fly rod a couple times mid summer… I still have the yellow spider wire 6# leader about 7’ ft long… I tied this on about 4 years ago… lol

Spent some time experimenting with the 2# mono casting distances on the micro-jigs swapping out spools with the super lines. The problem I have with 2# test is that I lose a lot of fish… I even break the line on the hook set… so used to a quick snap with the super line I forget to take it easy with the mono. I may have problems at the knot also. I lost a trophy Y.Perch with it and then ended up scrapping any more experimenting except on the lawn.

The other problem is that there is no real safe place to fish with it in my lakes. Most of the common lakes in my area have a 1 to 2’ layer of Starry Stonewort covering the bottom of the lakes… along with other nasty weeds along the edges of the breaks… fish hook up especially the big preds and bury themselves instantly.
