Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I made these at the request of a friend who saw a video of a guy catching bass with similar flies.  Tried to tell him that the bass were there and feeding, any fly would have worked, So far he has hooked and broken off bass on a small frog fly.

Just plain awesome!

Some great looking bugs,,,, gratz... how is the frog made?

Very nice and inventive. Those round circle-like flies in the middle of the bottom photo, are they frogs, too?

Good looking flies JC

Great stuff!
Extended tail flies, like those dragonflies are a challenge.
How do they hold up under casting?

I'm that friend! It is good to have a brother like John.

Unfortunately, none of those above are of my own invention but as result of research on YouTube and FlyTyingForums as well as here.  The circle style is suppose to mimic a frog from below and it should float hook point up making it weedless.  The extended body fly isn't hard to make but I would expect if you caught many bass on it the tail may get ripped off, however, the tail has thread wrapped along its length and the base is tied in on the hook after gluing with super glue.

Thanks for the kind comments.  One of the dragonflies was a group effort, me holding materials and my four year old grandson wrapping thread.  He also helped me palmer the feather on for the legs and tied in the wings.  He likes making "BUGS" as he calls them.

making "bugs" with grandpa... that's nice.

And... well, ... isn't that about right?

YES! ain't nothing better!

I have tied up a few of the dragon flies very similar but have yet had the chance to fish them. I have read that flies with wings like that will cause the fly to spin in the air and twist the line. The ones I tied I used some pearl flash ( the twisted stuff ) but I think that they will also twist. If they do I intend to just cut the wings off and fish them wingless. I understand the they will work just as well without wings. Just a thought.......

I asked my guy to let me know if the dragonfly flies spin and twists the line.  I tied the wings rather short and used some light baggie material that something for fly tying came in, so I hope the wing material is light enough not to impede the flight of the fly.

Rick asked how the frog was made, which one are you referring to.  I let you know.
