Fought Like a Warrior, Died With Honor, Tasted real good!!

With hunting season a vague memory,  they openned the private lake for fishing.  I was there early , it was cool and cloudy and we had the place to ourselves.  Cindy, my wife, was, as always anticipating our usual luck at this spot. (80 acre lake and we rarely , if ever,  fish anywhere but this one spot on the boat dock.  Here's why.)  If you could fill 2 five gallon buckets…

Photos of Unusual Catches

Seems to me this idea has been done here before but I searched "Unusual Catches' and it came up empty .I'll post one now and more another time. I would like to see what folks think of as an "Unusual Catch " and see the diversity of photos of their fishing events. This Fish hit a huge spoon and was caught in the mouth . Is it an "Unusual Catch " ? I think so. Unusually Aggressive!…

SPOONFLY FIELD TEST

Finally got out today a gave the fingernail spoonflies a try!!!!!! Beautiful day on the PRAIRIE light breeze about 20 and gusty!!!! 80 degrees + awesome winter day!!!!!!!!! Armed with these spoons and a 3 wt. flyrod medium action, fast action would work better!!!!!! They cast well and actually cast into the wind better than with the wind to you back!!!!! The one with dressing on the hook took fish better than those with out!!!!!! Looked good in the water on an intermediate sinking…

Got two minutes? Recylced Fish could use them!

How the heck do you recycle a fish???  Catch a monster 11'' bluegill, take a picture, and let that beast go for another angler to catch it again and enjoy that experience!

Recycled Fish ( http://www.recycledfish.org/ ) is the national non-profit organization of "anglers living a Lifestyle of Stewardship both on and off the water, because Our Lifestyle Runs Downstream."

But it's not about just…

FLYRODDERS, Did you ever feel left out when BILL"MUSKY" MODICA......

As a FLYRODDER, I always feel left out when BILL catches these huge BLUEGILL on spoons!!!!

I haven't used a spinning rod in years because I love the feel of long rod In my hand!!!!!!! Spoons and Flyrod do not mix!!!!! Even in the smaller sizes, a chunk of metal whizzing past your ear is a little scary to say the least!!!!! Even a wide brimmed hat offers little protction!!!!!!

In 95 or 96, Fly Tyer Magazine had an artical in unusual material section!!! Basically a hook…

Herman Brothers Pond Management

I just wanted to extend a huge "Thank You" to Herman Brothers Pond Management, and Nate Herman, who is a member of Big Bluegill for their incredible hospitality they extended me this last weekend!

Their operation is absolutely first class, and offers people in the Illinois, and the Midwest a chance to catch a really huge hybrid bluegill.

Take a look at this great fish. We caught several hybrid bluegill in the 1-1 3/4 pound range, and we also caught quite a few…

Pond Management Devices

It has been a very short, and uncommon type of winter in northern Illinois.....with the late start to the ice season, gill fishing has been sub-standard at best......but the bass fishing has been tremendous....here are some fish from this years 3 week ice season.…

Lincoln, Nebraska dentist Bruce Condello with 3 lb. Richmond Mill bluegill.

Here's the first decent photo out there of Lincoln, Nebraska dentist Bruce Condello with a 3 lb., 1 oz. bluegill caught two weeks ago at Richmond Mill Lake in North Carolina.  The fish took a 1/16 oz. Road Runner, with a black body and green tail.  The fish was released and still swims...ready to be captured again.  A story will be published in Pond Boss…

Today was a good day

Today I was out at the local pond doing some fly fishing, when I saw the Osprey that hangs out in the area came to join me. It was truly an amazing sight watching it glide over pond searching for it's prey. As I was watching it I started noticing fish boiling up whenever the Osprey's shadow passed over em. It was amazing to see these fish running, especially because alot of em were in spots I never would have guessed held fish at all! Eventually the Osprey caught a fish of it's own and left…

Giant bluegill using the Modica spooning method.

Here's a massive bluegill caught on Bill "Musky" Modica's spooning method.  This method has been heavily featured lately by In-Fisherman Magazine, both in print and on their nationally acclaimed fishing show.

This fish was over a foot long, and looked like it was taking steriods.  I'd love for Bill to describe this particular spoon and why he likes it so much.  Bill recommended I use this setup, and it worked like a charm.…

The new Big Bluegill logo is unveiled!!!!

Well? What do you think? Does it look like it would make a cool hat or sweatshirt? This was developed by the creator of Big Bluegill, Aaron Matos. He kind of stays behind the scenes, but he's always watching and monitoring us (spooky, isn't it?) so that we stay focused on big bluegill.

Recognized Carp Fisherman-Jim Gronaw

I would like to congratulate and thank Jim Gronaw for sharing his recent Carp fishing exploits with the members of Bigbluegill.com. It's a bluegill site and that's what really makes us go but it has been nice during the Winter doldrums to hear and see about some of the other options available right under our noses....Jim would tell us he's no expert but he has…

Do you have a favorite weed

I have a personal best as far as weeds are concerned. Curly Leaf Pond Weed is a fish magnet for me and I have a hard time passing a clump without fishing it. The lakes I fish in Michigan are loaded with them. You may see a single green stalk in 10' or 15' of water depending on water clarity or maybe a ¼ acre or more of them bunched together. They tend to grow deeper than a lot of lake weeds do…

It Sucks Being Shocked...

If you're a bluegill, that is. I love coming across little bitty  "one-liners" either in articles or research papers that either stand out as being profound, or explain via scientific documentation something generally perceived or accepted in the (bass) fishing world. Kind of like one of those "A-HA" moments. I don't find many of them, but I've come across a pair of studies…

Insights to Raising Fish Species

Per chatroom discussion request, I'm posting the more indepth discussion here. Expert and personal knowledge opinions are truly welcome. Correct me if any info is incorrect in anyway:

Here's one of the myriad articles I've studied about back in college between 1994 to 2001, while double focused on bio-medical and environment toxicology fields of study. Information was found in late 1995, but was not published and harvest until nearly a decade later. I've followed the information…

The Bluegill Diaries.....Loch, Stock, and big as a barrel........ Someday!

This blog will be an attempt on my part to document my family's attempt to grow consistent numbers of big Bluegill, which in this case will mean fish that weigh one pound or over. The key words here being "consistent numbers". Think of the times you have seen a photo of a smiling angler holding up a single, colossal Bluegill. There's certainly nothing wrong with that, after all it was his or her skill as an angler that lead to that memorable catch, and they should be justifiably proud of the…
