SUMMER TIME BACKWATER THUMPERS

i catch most of my fish in the back waters of lake chicot, what i call thicket fishing, a fly rod longer then seven foot is useless.

the only cast is a roll cast, your rod never gets behind your ear,it is rare that i use a leader longer then four feet ,you just can not roll a long leader under the low limbs of cypress or

tupelo gum trees not to mention the button wood bushes.

to generate the line speed needed to make those tight rolls i use 6 to 10 wt. line on 61/2 and seven ft.… Continue

Found the illusive slabs.

This weekend and last I have been fishing Lake Latonka which is a private lake not far from my house. We have been catching allot of fish but not many slabs. Finally yesterday I left my comfort zone and went to the deeps. Didn't catch as many but what we caught were good ones. Just a little confused, I still can't find the monsters. Any Ideas where to look? I am out of ideas. During the spring we just knock the monsters to death. I know they are there I just cant find them.

The Experience Continues

Somewhere between coning the hubs on BSA wheels and doing the final alignment test run on my son's Pinewood derby car, I heard the words, "When are we going to that warmwater place again?"

When these words are spoken, by anyone, within the confines of our household it means only one thing - someone's going fishing.

I took my oldest along on yet another exploratory trip to the warmwater discharge from a local power generating plant. This waterway gets quite a bit of angling… Continue

Hybrid sunfish in Ponds

Its only been a few years that I have caught hybrid sunfish to speak of. We found some in a local pond and discovered that they were the green sunfish/bluegill cross that are produced for fast growing and quick fishing opportunities.

Some pond owners and anglers do not like these fish, claiming that they can cause problems with spawning purebred bluegills and become overly aggressive and all. My brief experience with them has been pleasant and with big fish to boot.

The… Continue

Ice Fishing Deep Creek Lake

Deep Creek Lake is a 3,900 acre manmade lake in the extreme western Panhandle of Maryland and is quietly one of the top ice fishing locations for big bluegills and yellow perch. I first fished it back in January of 2005 and, as luck would have it, had my personal best day on the water the very first time on the ice. Good friend Ron Munshower and I fished the McHenry arm in about 20 to 25 ft of water not far from dying weed edges.

My first fish was memorable. We drilled a bunch of… Continue

Tough Fishing Northern Indiana

Anyone have suggestions? And what is the next thing to try? Fish not biting, changed hooks multiple times.
How is fishing at Shakeamac, Indiana?

bluegill habitat

I own a 14 acre lake that we have managed for bluegill and largemouth bass for the past five years. We have added nesting benches covered with gravel, pallet structes and Christams trees. Does anyone know what else can be added or what kind of baitfish or other that can be added to help the bluegill?

Thinking About Thinking About Fishing

As I write this morning, the official low temperature in Omaha was 15 below zero just an hour ago. Our area lakes have been covered in ice for more than a month now. From my perspective -- that of a fly fisherman -- ice constitutes an ugly, intolerable, and impenetrable scab on what otherwise are perfectly good bodies of water.

My inability to fish reduces me to thinking about fishing, or to be more precise today, thinking about how I think about fishing. It’s been an evolutionary… Continue

Predator fish

Hi everyone,

I just bought a house on an approximately 8 acre lake. It is a half mile long, skinny lake. It has some water around 25 feet deep towards the mid section and I would guess a lot of water 8 to 12 feet. The North end is under 6 foot deep with tons of weeds and pads. It seems to have a nice variation of water depths, many areas are shaded and I am told the water stays pretty cool in the summer.

I only had a couple opportunities to fish (Fall) as I was very busy… Continue

Float Fishing for Panfish - The basics

In Indiana, as well as most of the country, panfish are the most sought after fish by the majority of anglers. Of this large family of fish, bluegills and crappie make up the majority of the anglers focus. Harvested numbers of these two fish typically exceeds 100,000 fish in any given year on a large reservoir or lake. And of these fish, a large percentage are caught on live bait.

There are many ways of fishing live bait, but for panfish some form of bobber fishing is the standard… Continue
