Well JB, just like you, I like Linux as a personal OS as well, since Linux is the primary OS for most of the personal electronic platforms. Welcome aboard, and help when you can. I'll answer the question in forms of Discussion Forum to be organized. this way, we can simply come back to it when we need to.
Hi guys, Leo let me in here, you're all doomed ;-)
When people ask for advice about Windows, I'll try really hard to not start all my responses with, "1. Stop using Windows" but I hope you'll all understand if I give in to temptation once in a while :-)
I'm a Linux user on my own time; on my employer's time I'm primarily a Linux user ad secondarily a Mac user, and use Windows only in VMs for specific development and testing purposes.
One thing I'd throw out there generally is that if you're still using XP, it's really worth considering an upgrade to Windown 7. It really is better. Windows 8? I'm not a fan of the new UI; other than that I suppose it's a capable OS.
My time is a bit limited these days and I've been kind of a stranger on BBG, but I'll try to help out here in the tech support group when I can.

Thats all I use Ken, There is little need for more sophistication, if the goal is to merely find ponds and learn the lay of the land before visiting...
This is one time in technology, where less is more.

I've got Google Chrome on this computer. I would love to get Google Earth. I know I have to download Google Updater. I've tried several times to do this, but can never get to a spot that will let me download the Updater.
I know several months ago, I tried to download Google Earth, and managed to get "something" that had Google Earth, but also managed to install a toolbar onto my browsers that I didn't want, not to mention a whole bunch of other advertising things. Many of these adverts were video, and really showed down processing times and webpage loading. I've since managed to uninstall all that stuff, but would still like to get the real deal.
Leo..... HELP PLEASE...... Each time I try and download Google Earth, I get a message that says..."a problem has been detected and windows shut down to prevent damage to your computer" Then it says restart your computer.I am using Google Chrome and Windows XP. What might be going on here??? I tried downloading it twice today and got the same message both times.
One of them issues being dust bunnies we learn the hard way at least I did. An once of prevention can save you a bundle in the end I know but did learn a lesson. We need to learn to clean the dust not just outside our computers but inside or have it done if you feel squeamish about it like I was. I lost a computer a couple month ago the shop in Swanton told me it was full of dust and the fans couldn't get enough air to my power supply so I replace it. I traded computers with my wife and the fan for the motherboard was so full of dust well lets say thanks to Leo we didn't loose it we just caught it in time. I'll send a picture so don't let it happen get on cleaning intervals.
