I had a thought a couple of days ago.
This Spring, I think I might start targeting LMB's (I don't normally Bass fish) with a fly rod (hopefully a new 8 wt). Probably going to be tying my own poppers, either deer hair or cork.
Well, the hooks for those aren't cheap. You can get Diiachi Bass Bug hooks from Janns Netcraft, $6.79 (plus shipping) for a pack of 15. That's $0.46 / hook, more if add in shipping.
I got to thinking. Just go down to Wally World and get a pack of 1/0 worm hooks. Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp, pack of 8, for a little under $3 (plus tax), no shipping. That works out to around $0.36 / hook. Or, get a pack of Gamakatsu worm hooks, same size, $3.66 (plus tax) for a pack of six. That works out to about $0.62 / hook.
I really like the shape of the Gammie hooks. It's a curved-shank hook, similar to a very LARGE scud hook. It's light wire, so it should float very well with a large amount of deer hair on it. However, it's kind of expensive.
Now, the Eagle Claw hooks are really cheap, almost half the price of the Gammies. They are a light wire hook as well, but it's a straight shank.
I picked up a pack of the Eagle Claw hooks. I'll see if I can bend the shank a bit to give me that "curved shank" and let the hook point hang down there.
When I do get around to tying some of these, I'll probably pick up a pack of Gammies as well, and do a side-by-side test.

Nice looking fly - I think I will tie it this week. Its going to be one for my box this spring and I even like the name.
Bruce- I dont know if you can edit the post or not, anyone know how to edit a post?
Thanks for the post Rick, Sleepy
Hi Bruce, I tie that one too its a killer fly, thanks for the post Sleepy
There's a mistake in my fly pattern. Is there a way I can edit my post?
Here is an old time pattern I used quite frequently called the Picket Pin. It can be tied and fished as a nymph, streamer or dry fly. Like all flies it works sometimes better than others.
1. Tie in the tail of 2 brown hackle tips.
2. Tie in brown hackle to spiral wrap to the eye.
3. Tie in gold or silver ribbing.
4. First dub the body using peacock herl. I make a rope to help with durability.
5. Spiral wrap the herl to 3 eye lengths behind the eye.
6. Spiral wrap the hackle to 3 eye lengths behind the eye.
7. Counter-wrap the wire through the hackle to 3 lengths behind the eye.
8. Grab about a half-pencil thickness of grey squirrel. Clean out the under fur and tie down at the eye. The wing length can be anywhere from to the bend in the hook to the end of the tail. There is no right or wrong length. Let the fish decide.
I hope this wasn't confusing. I tried to make it clear. The pattern and tying instructions can be found all over the internet. The head on this fly I tied is a bit long. I tied it quickly to post on another site for a tutorial.
