Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I SAW THE ARTICLE ON BOWFIN. WE CALL THEM DOGFISH IN MICHIGAN. I STARTED OUT CATCHING 6 CREEK CHUBS, WITH A #10 HOOK & SPLITSHOT & BOBBER, ABOUT 4:30 P.M. FRIDAY. I THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE ENOUGH. I PUT ON A STEEL LEADER & A LARGE FOAM BOBBER & LET IT DRIFT DOWNSTREAM FROM THE DAM. THE CURRENT WAS SLOWER THAN IT HAS BEEN & I THOUGHT I COULD CATCH SOME BLUEGILLS, WHILE I WAS FISHING FOR A BOWFIN. 1ST FISH I CAUGHT WAS A 13" LARGEMOUTH BASS WITH A HUGE BELLY. SHORTLY, THEREAFTER I CAUGHT A 16" BASS. DIDN'T SEEM LIKE THE BLUEGILL WERE BIGHTING SO I GRABBED A POLE I HAD RIGGED UP FOR BULLHEAD FISHING WITH A STEEL LEADER & A SINKER. I PUT A CHUB ON IT & CAUGHT A 24" NORTHERN PIKE.  SOME NEIGHBORHOOD GIRLS ASKED ME, IF COULD FIX THEIR REEL. OOPS, WHERE IS MY BOBBER? 17" BASS.  COULDN'T FIX REEL SAID THEY COULD USE MY BLUEGILL POLE. TALKED THEM IN TO CATCHING ME A COUPLE MORE CHUBS UNDERNEATH THE BRIDGE IN SHALLOW WATER DOWNSTREAM FROM THE DAM. CAUGHT A SCRAWNY NORTHERN PIKE. A COUPLE OF OTHER FISHERMAN STARTED FISHING ON THE OTHER SIDE OF DAM. THEY CAUGHT A BASS RIGHT AWAY.

I DECIDED I WOULD START FISHING ABOVE THE DAM. LOOKING FOR BULLHEADS OR BOWFIN, HOPING I COULD CATCH A BIG BLUEGILL BOTTOM FISHING. THE PARK HAS LIGHTS & I HAVE HAD LUCK CATCHING SOME NICE BULLHEADS JUST BEFORE & AFTER DARK. I CAUGHT 8 BULLHEADS 1-12" 1-14" USING A COMBINATION OF CRAWLERS & CHUBS & 3 POLES, ALONG A WEEDLINE ON A SHALLOW FLAT. I HAD SOMETHING BIG ON & BITE THE LAST CHUB IN HALF. THREW BACK IN THE SAME SPOT WITH JUST THE HEAD & THE BOBBER DISAPPEARED. SET THE HOOK & MY POLE BENT IN HALF. WHATEVER IT WAS WAS HUGE. SEEMED TO ROLL OVER AS IT SPIT THE HOOK IT SEEMED TO HAVE A WHITE BELLY. WAS PRETTY DARK AT THIS TIME.  THIS IS WHAT GIVES ME FISHING FEVER. WHEN THE BIG ONE GETS AWAY.

WONDER WHO WILL REMEMBER THIS DAY LONGER. ME OR THE NEIGHBORHOOD GIRLS. TAKE A KID FISHING.
