Do you love big bluegill?
Made plans to fish my favorite hybrid sunfish pond this morning. Got there about 8:45 AM and it was already starting to heat, with highs predicted in the 100's. Started off with a grey grass shrimp 1/64 th oz hairjig and picked up a few scrawny bass, then dropped it over near the dock and let it free-fall to the bottom. Before I reached a 4 count had a bump and set the hook to this, my firat of 15 hybrid sunfish today...GSF X BG cross...…

Summer is here- it is safe to say now that Chicago is in the grips of 3 - 100 degree days in a row, a record that stood slightly longer than the Cubs have endured without a championship. Speaking of records:
Some numbers hard to ignore - you bet ya. Big news from the last time out. I set a goal on my podcast and I beat my goal and personal best for fish…

Hit the lake at 6:30 this morning and the water was already 85 degrees. Started the first hour fly fishing poppers. The bite has slowed down from last week with the bluegill and shellcracker holding deeper in the 8' depth but managed to catch a few of each. (will add the pics)
By 7:30 had my jigs looking for the crappie. Been finding a lot of small fish and have worked hard over the last month trying to find some bigger fish. Well today I found them in 8' of water bitting a foot off…
ContinueI finally got on the water today for the first time in ages, rising at 4:00 for the occasion. Float tube, a couple of fly rods, and one spinning rod preloaded into the minivan the night before, so all I had to do was get in and drive.
The day started off really slow. After paddling from the parking lot area across to where I intended to start prospecting, I had a tiny bass (6 or 7" hit the popper I was trolling from my fly rod as I went. Then, around the point, some hits on a…

OK, looks like July 2, 2012 will go down as one of the all-time great panfishing days in history with a slew of high-end specimen of many species hitting the board tonight. Congratulations to all! Here's how my day went, the short version...
I hit a pond at about 3:30 pm that we had caught big red ears from in the past...had caught my previous PR there two springs ago. Saw some big fish bedding 2 weeks prior but could not get them to bite ANYTHING! The bluegill were still on bed, and…

I have been bitten by the fly tying bug. I'm told the bite is vicious, and the effects can be long lasting. My only source of cheap flies has moved, and now Bass Pro seems to be my only other option for flies that I can actually see before buying. I have tried tying some jigs with no real success. I guess a bench vise doesn't work as well as a fly tying vice? Like I mentioned in a earlier post, my jigs came out looking like a mad cat that had been dipped in water. I tried using hair from…
