"Fun to catch,"....
Now that's an understatement. I hope every trip will give me the chance to catch a bass. I'm always equipped when on the water to do so. Mind you, I'm not a "bass man," per se. But entire fortunes have been made because of the "green trout" - obviously there is something going for them.

To be fair, the same has been done with the much idolized trout. Indeed, centuries of applause have accompanied what is essentially a persnickety garbage mouth. The mystique surrounding it has accounted for countless fortunes earned — and lost.

But, aside from the PLACES trout are often found, I don't really get it. Even a basic study of them shows that most of the appeal is based in lore and legend. They are proof that men will believe almost anything, if only enough ink is spilled about it.

The Black Bass, on the other hand, shares few of the annoying qualities of the trout. For one, Ol' Bucketmouth is a willing biter. Always on the offense, you don't generally have to tempt him with micro size, "match the hatch" precision. A strip cut from your old shirt, tied to a hook, is as likely to draw a strike as anything. He is also an acrobatic brute... Airborne antics and lunging runs are common. He defines angling thrill.

But best of all, Mr. Bass is near ubiquitous nowadays. There aren't many places you may go where he cannot be caught. He has been exported all over the world, too, and has become a favorite of anglers across the globe.

Deny him his due, if you must.
But don't forget that while waiting for something else, most of us will "settle" for catching bass. I guess that can be counted as part of the fun, you know?
