I could sure use some Bluegill advise..

I have been fishing an abandoned company pond since last year, primarily I have been catching Bass, but I caught several monster Bluegill last year, one tipping the scale at just over 2 pounds..I caught those few on a Rapala minnow..I would love to get advise on a more reliable lure/bait. I'm fishing an 8 acre pond, with a center depth of about 45 feet. The water is fairly clear to very lightly stained, if that matters..Any help would be appreciated.

I still haven't caught a good bluegill, usually catch one by accident by now. Having fun catching bass and crappie. I see the bass are keeping you busy.

I have a quarry pond like this one - you will find the gills on the edges of that 7 - 10 foot shelf all the way around the facility and this is "big water" which means they could be anywhere. You can throw some tiny cranks or light jigs and set a float slider-style so that the you can cast out to the edge of that shelf and let the jig or hook bait fall to that ledge. You can work the jig across that flat and you should have all the gills you care to catch. When I last fished a structure like this - I would fish 8' down - 6' down and I would catch 75 fish - of course I would going for trout and these were all gills....

You can also run 2 BB split shot ahead of small spinner or crank bait to drive your offering down to that ledge to the deeper waters. Feather-cast the rig so that the line is stopped near the end of the cast and your lure lands behind the shot - otherwise you will tangle. Feather cast by putting one finger on your spool and slowing the cast down - this will make sure the hooks don't tangle your shot or lure and the rig lands straight out. Count down that lure to your depth and crank away. 1 second per foot.. Careful not to let it sink too long or snags will result. You can get a "feel" for that depth with a cheaper jig. Once you learn the depths with that jig and start bouncing the ledge or snagging with the cheap jig - you can make a mental note and you will know both the length and the depth of that ledge.

Now cast over it with the good stuff.

Some good lures: Mini Crank Baits -Fish Fry Crank Bait Shad, Fire Tiger, Trout

Jigs for Working Ledge: Ugly Bug (snag-reducing jigs)

These jigs stand up and reduce your loss of jigs with the patented head and rubber arms and offset eye: Ugly Bug

These are NOT sold anywhere by you so you would have the only ones - these will kill the bigger bass and gills on your quarry water. Tip this with 1/4 crawler or 1/2 red worm for some scent or fish minnows or leech on these jigs...

Enjoy and share the success with us.
