This greatest gift of fishing are the memories…..we’ve obviously done a lot of other things during life’s journey which become distant memories…but our fishing memories remain hardened to go over time and time again…..you can tell the people that really know me well both family and friends, they always ask me about fishing…and I like it that way…..
My first fish was a Pumpkinseed in Packanack Lake, Wayne NJ. I recall catching Bluegills, Pseeds, Golden Shiners ,Turtles, Bullheads , Bass, Perch and crappie in my youth from Packanack Lake.
I scaled a few but I chose to filet 98% of these fish…..you could catch 100 or more off one cypress tree…….
It is John….this is the main sunfish that I grew up with on the bayous of southeastern Louisiana……..I would put a small float on a telescopic pole and tip a 1/64th ounce jig head with a live grass shrimp and these fish would eat it up…..not very big, most 5 to 7 inches but I’m certain I caught and cleaned at least 10,000 of these spotted sunfish in my high school years when I fished nearly everyday before joining the Navy……
One cool Fish, Jeff! I have a good book called 'America's favorite Fishing' by F. Philip Rice, in which he describes the anal fin that this one has. He also notes black earflap with white margin. He calls it an Orange spotted Sunfish.
