Do you love big bluegill?
One of three species of Spotted Sunfish I have caught in Louisiana and South Carolina where I've seen the Black Spotted Species.....

I scaled a few but I chose to filet 98% of these fish…..you could catch 100 or more off one cypress tree…….
It is John….this is the main sunfish that I grew up with on the bayous of southeastern Louisiana……..I would put a small float on a telescopic pole and tip a 1/64th ounce jig head with a live grass shrimp and these fish would eat it up…..not very big, most 5 to 7 inches but I’m certain I caught and cleaned at least 10,000 of these spotted sunfish in my high school years when I fished nearly everyday before joining the Navy……
One cool Fish, Jeff! I have a good book called 'America's favorite Fishing' by F. Philip Rice, in which he describes the anal fin that this one has. He also notes black earflap with white margin. He calls it an Orange spotted Sunfish.
