Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I know this is going to be hard to believe but this really happened to me yesterday. About noon yesterday it was hot, I mean really hot and  was in the Ozarks in a clear mountain river  trying to cool off, I waded out into neck deep water with only my head , cap, and polarized sunglasses above water , standing there still enjoying the cool of the river I looked down in the water and much to my surprise there was a longeared sunfish about a 8 or 9 inches long suspended about 6 inches below the surface. At first I thought he might be curious , or thought I might be some kind of structure, but now I realize he was calling me out, for three minuted we were eye to eye and he was staring at me , he let me move my hand within 6 inches of him and it didn't seem to scare him or bother him, he just kept staring at me like he was the Boss of the river. I was fasinated that I was that close to a big sunfish in his natural enviroment and I wanted to see how this was going to play out, I thought about trying to catch him with my hands, thought that would be cool but I just let him do his thing and I watched, it looked like he had a smirk on his face as he finally broke our eye to eye stare down and slowly  be began to swim around me,and I thought he was just going to swim off when all of a sudden  he BIT ME, he had found a mole I have on my back and he BIT ME  hard enought to bring blood. I felt back there to make sure he had not removed it.   Well it's on now, next trip up he is going to taste the steel of my hook at the end of my fly line, we can't have sunfish acting like that, the next thing you know they will be acting like piranna , so I am going to remove this  MANEATER before  He can teach others to do the same,  I suggest that yall do the same.             LOFR

I can tell you right now ,that is going to catch fish. MANEATERS beware the MOLE FLY will be your doom .    LOFR

You got a build recipe for that?

Awesome! Just plain awesome! can't wait.

THINK I SAW SOME OF THESE WHEN I WAS IN THE SOUTH EAST ORIENT IN THE LATE 60'S !

ALL kidding aside this is a great looking simple bug!

Back when I was in the Boy Scouts and attending BSA Lifegaurd Certification course at camp, the instructors and attendees were shoulder deep in the aquatics area swimming pond for instruction.  The water was a bit chilly that morning and you can imagine the state of certain upper body parts on all the guys.  The resident population of long ear sunfish was having a hey-day biting said body parts. By the end of the session all involved were forced to stand with arms crossed across their chests to protect themselves.  Blood WAS drawn on a number of guys.  Being the swimming area, no fishing is allowed to purge the little piranna.  So this story is not unheard of.

While floating the Current and Jack's Fork rivers in the MO. Ozarks, if you sit long enough in the water, minnows will nibble on your leg hair.  I have snorkled in these rivers and often swim with smallmouth and sunfish that as long as you make no sudden movements or threatening moves the fish will just hang in the water column to check you out.  It may also not hurt that for a few days we had been catching small crayfish and had been attempting to hand feed these fish.

Beautiful story! I had to read it three times...

LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOL THIS IS A GREAT STORY and I may have to make up a MOLE BUG!!!! Maybe we could just make up some bugs and attach em to our bodys and forget about the poles altogether!!!!!

Hey Leo you got some special glue for BODY BUGS!!!!!! WE COULD BECOME THE NEXT BIG THING !
ALMOST LIKE FACEBOOK only we'll call it BUG BOOK!

Wow David I think your on to something.

This is for the R and D department of the Mole Fly Research Team, great effort, I'm impressed, If you could incorporate a few ugly hairs coming out of the center it might put it over the top and end up as a classic  american fly that will stand the test of time.   LOFR

I ran across this old post of mine and thought "Well it's that time again "  thats when we start wade fishing in the rivers , and thought that this  warning would be as current today as it was three years ago, so with so many people joining  Bluegill  Big Bluegill , they may not have seen this post and may not know about the dangers in the waters, so I offer this up again as a Public Service Announcement.   LOFR

hahahahahahahahahaa   this is so cool LOFR!!    i bet you even practised running on water!!
