Do you love big bluegill?
Just a quick blog for those who want to remove the pinbones from their bluegill fillets. In the pic below, the fillet has been started and the top of the ribcage is exposed...
At this point simply lift the fillet by peeling it back with your thumb. With cold fillets ( fish that have been on ice) the pinbones will remain intact to the ribs as you peel. You can lay the…

I am new to Ohio and love to fish for bluegills could someone point me to 2-4 best lakes in Ohio. Thanks
I recently moved to a new city here in the grand ole state of Wisconsin and can't seem to find gills anywhere and Lake Link has been no help. All the locals fish for Pike and Bass which isn't terrible but panfish are more of a staple food in my household.. I'm at my wits end searching and searching to no avail, so what's a fella to do?

Well, I figured it was about time to say hello on here. I made my account a year or two back and never really used it, but I plan to be more active on the forum now as I see there is a lot of knowledge to gain off the forum. I will state right off the bat I will likely be one of the younger members here, but I also have a lot of fishing experience. I hope I can learn a lot from some of you guys! I will tell you guys a little bit about me, so you have a general idea of who I am.
I…

so i am thinking about starting to feed a spot i fish on a regular basis, i have heard fish chow, dog food even corn. any one have any thoughts or knowledge on feeding fish in a creek fed pond. its mostly blue gill green sun fish and cat fish. also this years seems to be tons of hybrids. a few small mouth bass. whats the best thing to put out for the money? the pond has enough room for them to get larger and plenty of fish but they all seem very average to small. so i thought maybe giving a…

Went Longnose Gar fishing last night and had a blast!. Because of their narrow mouths these fish are extremely hard to hook and they are MASTERS at stealing live bait. Got skunked, but still had fun because of the challenge.

Thrift store pill box, $1
I sanded off the lettering on the day markers so I can label each segment as I wish.
Add split shot, hooks, small lures and you have a mini tackle box.
Get enough of them like I have and you can keep lots…

DON'T KNOW if anyone else has noticed this happening or not so here we go.
While I was talking to member Ray Ditzenberger on the phone today we eventually got to the good ole days of summer.
When I was a kid growing up I remember July's and August weather as brutally hot and no wind . Couldn't catch a breeze for anything to cool us down . We'd just go swimming in the local pool to cool off in the dog days of summer. That was the early to mid 60's . He recalls the same thing and I…

I decided on a recent trip that I would look back and reflect on a few of the memories of the 2013 season to date....If you have followed me at all on BBG you know that I traditionally count down to Good Friday as this usually marks the end of Winter and our water temperatures begin their slow crawl toward the 60s as we wait impatiently for our beloved Coppernose gills to become active..........Within 75 miles of my residence I have 12 river systems and over 50 creeks that regularly produce…

After doing a little research on lakes within a twenty mile radius of my location, on the DNR Master Angler website and a call to the local DNR office I was motivated and directed to focus for the Master Angler Bluegill from this lake. My experiences previously on this lake are considerable boat traffic from pleasure as well as a lot of…

I made a blog post earlier today about Life, Lessons and the Perspective of Big. I also got another more practical lesson on the fly rod while I was at it.
The selected spot for todays Angling Adventure was one of my favorites, an intimate place I know very well. Most of the time I have it to myself and today was no different. However, I was pretty a sure a fly rod would be a tough thing to manage there. As it turns out I was right.
I've never been real good at…

When we talk about BIG, we sometimes need a lesson in perspective. I went fishing today and got just such a lesson.
Lately, I've been planning the purchase of a float tube and sold my 10 foot Hobie kayak to fund the venture. But, the purchase was stalled and for now I'm still shore bound. Nevertheless, I got a chance to rethink my "floating" priorities on this morning's junket.
At 56k acres, Lake…

I have been doing a lot of experimenting with the grass shrimp and jig fly patterns for gills, crappies and more. Here are a few of the innovations I have come up with...
This is a 'hackle-jig' pattern of red crafthair for the tail, purple chennel for the body with a brown hackle wrap. The jighead is a 1/64th oz Jerry's Flies pre-painted ball head jig. Hope to test…

Finally have seen the sun after all the rain we have had in the last week. My oldest son and I decided that we should go fishing this morning, so we loaded up and launched our kayaks at dawn. Water level at our favorite lake was still about 5ft above normal but we were confident that we could still find some gills. Caught a few on top water around flooded structure but went with a bead eye dragon fly nymph to connect with the bigger ones…

Brother Greg and I are hankering to go wading and flyroddin' in a few small rivers soon .We want to target Smallmouths and Red Breasted Sunfish in particular . Never caught a Smallie on a flyrod . I have some ideas on what I think would work but I'm just guessing ;Mickey Finn ,beaded nymphs,Marabou streamers , Feather Streamers, Hopper ,Crayfish, and Hellgrammite imitations and Poppers .Any ideas out there from folks that are experienced with Flyrodding Smallies or other species I might…
