Do you love big bluegill?
Don was killing 'em today!Massive lepomii (sunfish), nice salmoides (bass), and the biggest ictalurid (catfish) I've ever seen on the fly - actually, the FIRST I've seen on the fly!And these are…Continue

I'll admit, I'm lazy. Why expend a lot of effort and gas trying to find ponds, when all you have to do is open up Google Earth, zoom in on your area, and start looking?I know that I've found a LOT…Continue

Cattails are great to have, if you don't mind the banks overcrowding, and if your water have sudden drop-offs to an 8 to 10ft depth, say 5ft out. However shallow ponds, not a good idea. We have plenty of shallow waters around here, and let's just say, cattails gotten the upper hand to the point where herbicides have to be used to control them yearly. It gets quite pricey. We have lakes that benefits quite well with cattails due to the filtration and bioremediation the species provide from run-offs, and plenty of natural cover for aquatic and beneficial insect populations.
Probably if you seen it before you wouldn't agree. It didn't take long and all kinds of weeds took over some of it my fault. I thought that tall grass looked good and it does but I let it get out of hand now I have a job ahead to get it out of there and the hard part is it went into the pond and sprouted runners. Would never be able to fish there for sure. I'll get it hopefully. Hopefully I can get back there more often than I was able to this year.
HEY DICK thanks for taking the time to post the pics of your pond buddy.... Looks good to me !
Ken its 20+ years old. we moved out here in 1990 and we dug the pond 1st then had the house built.
Vince I do have nice fish except for the gills but if it gets much worse it will be hard to fish the prime spots for all the weeds.
Dick I would do anything to have a pond of my own, and yours doesn't look bad at all. I never saw it before, but even in what you call a poor condition, it looks like a fishing paradise to me. The pictures of the fish you have pulled from it reinforces my belief that it still has a lot of good life left in it. I wish I lived close enough to give you a hand with it, and help bring it back to what it once was.
Wow after a good walk around I've took picture of what a pond shouldn't look like. My pond really got away from me this year don't know if I'll ever be able to get it under control especially if I have another year like this one. Water temp is 50 degrees so when the feed runs out of the feeder I'll be pulling it.
Next the cattails really excelled they were there in the spring but couldn't get to them so now I have more than enough.
Then there is a grass I just liked I thought it was neat but it grew like I was putting fertilizer on it. Its called Parasmites.
I've never had to ur a herbicide before but I think I may have to to get the cattail and Parasmites under control then last my white amours died off this year and my last weed that I have concerns about is Chara. I did manage to get most of it raked out but it's still showing me who the boss is. Anyway this is a picture of a pond that is neglected and maybe not long but it don't take long for thing to get ahead of you. This is what a pond should not look like.
Kayak? definitely!
