Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Big gills' on the silverware.....spoons, to be exact........

Certainly not anything new to BBG members, thanks to our very own Bill Modica. I  purchased these spoons a couple weeks ago, and finally got a little time to try one of them out this afternoon, in between rain showers. I chose a Firetiger pattern, and fished it naked (no tipping)  and unmodified....in other words, with the factory treble in place. I will probably replace the three-pronger with a single hook, per Musky's advice, in the near future.

Our gills are still nesting, but the largest specimens have just about finished up, leaving the smaller males on the nests while the bigger boys have headed out to deeper water to rest and recuperate. Hence the switch to spoons, rather than a jig and float. Around these parts BG will nest most of the summer months, but I seem to notice the biggest fish getting on first, then each successive class of fish gets a little smaller. Although I will still take larger females hanging out in a little deeper water, waiting to come in.

I caught both HBG and native gills on the spoon, but didn't have much time to really experiment.....the rain drove me off the water. Still, the results are encouraging.

Johnson 'Splinter' spoon...Firetiger, 1/12 oz.

 No giants, just pound-class fish.

Beautiful fish and a great catch. A one pounder is my goal

Nice solid looking hybrids.

Massive. It'd be an achievement to catch a pounder 'gill for me.
But I didn't plan well. I should have bought property with a pond, years ago.

"No giants, only pound clas fish."               HA !!!

So, do you cast these in deeper water? Drift? Troll? How do you fish them?

I usually cast and retrieve.....with the speed varying according to how deep I want the spoon to run.

My buddy takes a small Castmaster and replaces the treble with a single hook.  Adds a Powerbait wax worm and does real well.  Great on windy days or to reach pre-spawn gills from shore

Nicely done!
