Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I have a personal best as far as weeds are concerned. Curly Leaf Pond Weed is a fish magnet for me and I have a hard time passing a clump without fishing it. The lakes I fish in Michigan are loaded with them. You may see a single green stalk in 10' or 15' of water depending on water clarity or maybe a ¼ acre or more of them bunched together. They tend to grow deeper than a lot of lake weeds do but they hold fish. If you are fishing larger clumps seem like they always have that clearing or ally for you to through that jig or spinner in. Then there are them holes in the weeds which you don't want to overlook drop a jig down and hang on, I've caught many fish out of them holes. I found if you find Curly Leaf Pond Weed just past the lilly pad break line because they grow in the deeper water then you have an extra bonus again a fish holding magnet which can't be passed up. I do try to fish the deeper weeds in my experience they tend to hold larger fish which may not be true for bedding fish. Weeds are where the fish are if anyone has a favorite weed or weeds share it with us but above all don't hate the weeds fish them you might have the surprised. Of a lifetime.

Thank you Leo for your words of wisdom. I love your inputs and I know you put a lot of thought in your answers. I appreciate any input you have but you still haven't told me your favorite weed. If you love to fish and I know you do what is that weed you like to head to and feel confident your going to catch a fish on.

Hope john reply's so we can get his thought on the subject and maybe he has a favorite weed. Any time I'm on the water I'll hunt the weeds first and I have had the best luck with the american pondweed then of coarse lilly pads.

Great subject starter there Dick. Indeed weeds are an essential habitat creators for fishes of all kind. It's truly critical to introduce the right kind of weeds that closely match the native habitats, without an endangerment to invasive species. Bruce, please have your gurus give us insights to this subjects. I'll use tye findings to intro to tye engineers that will be creating the structured ponds soon..ooo...just tickling with anticipation.

Whats not to love. You know if you had a lake you fished and it had only have a 10' by 10' square of weeds and the rest void of weeds guess what, I'm going to fish the weeds. Weeds are a big decision maker especially when there is not many to be found. Then it could be the opposite and so many weeds you don't know where to stare especially if it's a new lake. That's where a lake map can be you best friend. Now you have to start picking the lake apart. Find them drop offs and point something different that the fish can relate to.

John is the editor of world-renowned In-Weeds magazine.  We need his input.

My favorite is definitely American Pondweed (I think it's a Potemogeton species).  Very easy to fish around.  Holds tons of invertebrates.  The bluegil love it for it's shade, and it gives them a little security, but I can toss a jig into the American Pondweed and not get hung up.  Good subject!
