20170717- I’m considering adding another local lake to my hit list. On two separate trips the past couple days I’ve done some reconnaissance and contour mapping. 10 year history and Back ground check reveals a thin history of trophy B.Gills with one breaking the eleven inch mark… certainly raised my eyebrow a…Continue

So, a fish story, My brother Larry is over from North Carolina for our annual fishing trip and we decide to run over to Kentucky Lake the first day. So, we start looking for Crappie and that's pretty slow so we begin to look for some bluegill. He is throwing a 1/32 oz jig and we are catching a few. I decide to throw a pink bluegill slider on a 1/16 oz roadrunner head. We are both picking up one here and one there when I make a cast next to a stickup and get a nice thump. I set the hook and…Continue
I need some help on fishing for Bluegills here in Minnesota. I used to fish alot as a kid but never really paid attention to what we were doing (dad always knew where to go and what to use). I'm mainly looking for help on depths the where they might be during the season. Right now where would they be found. How much would change in June, July and fall. I have kids who want to catch fish but usually end up seeing a frustrated dad instead, I'm afraid they will lose interest. I grew up…Continue
Due to an automobile accident I do not currently do much outside in the cold as it is somewhat painful with pins in the ankle. This being said with the advance in winter fishing gear I am thinking of trying it maybe though a guided service. But who knows still watching our pennies.

Ran across a cool short story by writer James Prosek and his childhood dreams about bluegill fishing.......It caught my eye when he said he found bigbluegill.com while browsing one night while working in the museum in Raleigh......
Go to gardenandgun.com/article/bluegill-dreams for a cool short story.
A few weeks ago, I posted the math related to calculating just how much line is needed to fill a reel spool (of known dimensions) to a desired depth and in doing so, determined that it takes one heck of a lot of line if its diameter is .001". This is what Sufix claims for its 2 lbs. Nanobraid. If one converts the millimeter measurement Sufix also provides to inches, it is a bit closer to .002" as I recall. Still, it is incredibly small for a true braided line.
Anyway, I have fished…Continue
Closed out 2016 yesterday with a total of 5,921 sunfish for 2016 with six total species caught on the Albemarle. Here is the breakdown by species during another great year.....
Coming in at Number Six for the year is the REDBREAST Sunfish: Not as abundant on the Albemarle as other species but still doing well in several locations..........I release the ones I catch here hoping they will increase in numbers because they are very fun to catch.…Continue
Decided to hit up the river for some panfish action since I've never really targeted panfish on this body of water before. Being a flowing body of water, I headed for some still backwaters. I first hit the marina but no panfish. I head further to a more secluded and quiet backwater that is 6' deep at the time. To get here, you gotta cross through 2' shallow sand bars. Once there, I start at the end of the backwater and work out. Right away I picked up some 5"-6" bluegills in 2' of water…Continue
Tuesday was mediocre as far as fishing goes, with only 28 caught of the usual species: largemouth, sunfish, perch and crappie. But Wed. on a different lake was like night and day! The weather was different : overcast with sprinkles vs. sunny; the lakes were much different: the previous lake is much larger and deeper with miles of wetlands; the lake yesterday 25' shallower with no wetlands but with a rip rap dam at one end and a long steep bank with overhangs.
Both lakes have produced…Continue
Went to Old Hickory this morning to work out some bugs in my Garmin 7 SV, no luck there. Decided while I was there to fish a little. Only had a couple of hours so, I tried a little bass fishing. Bluegills wouldn't leave my slider alone so, I tried a white Roadrunner. Nothing, not even a sniff. Back to the slider, peck peck peck. Changed to a dark Crappie Slider and it was game on. Caught about 50 mostly small in an hour plus 2 Kentuckies and a Largemouth. Just a few big enough to keep so I…Continue
Has anyone shopped at one of the Field and Stream Outdoor Stores? How's their fishing department? Grand opening this weekend about an hour from me ...........Looks alot like Bass Pro...
I went out on the kayak the other day and found a bunch of agressive gills in deep water (25'-30') off a weed edge. Took several 8 inchers for a meal but also got this beauty that was just shy of 11". Released it to swim again.
Hey guys today the wife and I are going fishing for bluegill at one of the ponds in her parents subdivision. We have fished there a few times before but have never really caught a large amount of fish there, but we have not ever fished the whole lake very thorough. We have always fished a point in the lake that I knew we would get bites just to make sure that my wife stay interested in fishing. She gets bored very easily so it is best to put…Continue
As we close out what I consider to be peak on the Albemarle region of coastal North Carolina for Bluegill fishing, I wanted to take a glance back over the last three months and see how things went. Here's what I discovered for 2016:
In May I fished 15 times for a total of 1,024 gills.........the largest creel was 120 and the lowest was 25........That worked out to an average bluegill creel of 68 for these fishing…Continue
Ok guys here is pond number four this week, I kind of took it easy and went to a friends house to hang out and fish a little bit after work. The pond is located in Liberty Park subdivision and the GPS coordinates are 33°29'23.92"N, 86°39'39.81"W. Just keep in mind that this is a private pond for residents and guests. Hear is a shot of what the lake looks like.…Continue
