That is great Mike ! Thanks for the tip on the fluro leader .What is the coldest temp you got catching a Gill on the flyrod ?.I should try this as I usually can get Gills from shore any time of year but wont be casting one through the ice ! A while back I made a "Bluegill Calendar" but I dont think all fish were caught in the same year .I did it to archive their seasonal habits.I have a Perch , Crappie and Bass monthly/ Seasonal catches  also. Here's the Bluegill one : http://bigbluegill.com/photo/albums/bluegill-calendar

All of them were on floating line, and most of them are with a 2 or 3wt rod & line. One or two were with a new 5wt rod (Redington CT) I was trying out.

I just use a heavy enough fly (and have been known to tip it with something like a live waxworm if the bite is really light) to get the entire leader to sink. I make my own leaders and sometimes use flouro if I know I'm going to need it to sink. Normally I can get deep enough with an 8 or 9' leader. The water is still in the 50s here, and today I caught that 'gill at about 4 to 5 feet down.

Knew I'd better get it done today, tomorrow is going to be rain, then sub-freezing temps for a few days.

Flyrod is a June /July floating line thing for me but I appreciate this calendar of BG catches on the flyrod .Now I'd like to know which months were floating line and which were sinking line and other details

Gills are so much fun on a light fly rod.

Did it this year! A fish on the fly rod for every month of the year for 2016. Not always possible here in Ohio.
