Ice fishing

OK, today I went ice fishing for the first time in about 20 years.

I have had this fear of falling threw ice since the last time I fell in. I was in my late teens, it was about 4 degrees out and I fell into a lake we were riding our motorcycles and snowmobiles on. The lake had an aerator that did not allow the ice to freeze as thick in certain places. When I fell in, I was up to my neck and it was very hard to get myself out. However I did get out before my friends got back to me. I got on… Continue

Hi yes i too went through the ice as a teen too,I was running on thin ice in a gravel pit with my friends, i surfaced in the same hole i went through, had to swim and crawl as i broke ice back to the shore,it's something you never forget. Yes i love the nor vise its built like a tank  its worth every $$ ,i watched norm on you tube put dubbing on with it, that sold me on it ,fast and user friendly.the jaws hold very good ,I have tied from a # 22 to a #2 with the standard jaws .I also have a HMH vise that is made about 10 miles from my house,it too is built like a tank, both are rotary ,but the nor vise smokes it. i use standard bobbins and the auto ones with the Nor vice. Thanks for the friend add on. Hi kirbaer, Sounds like you have as much rod building experience as me except this was my third fly rod.  Everything I know came from youtube and http://www.rodbuildingforum.com/ I think one of the best sites on the web for fly rod building.  I love building em just can't afford too many.  plus not enough room to store em. finished the 5 wt this morning, I am very happy with it.

Thanks for the info. I look forward to buying a dremel tool sometime soon. I'm sure it works well with balsa too.

Do you have a problem when on the lowest setting the dremel spins too fast. I think I could do better if it was slower. I used a small grout bit and have pretty good success, the speed is now my biggest problem. Thanks for the help!

Sand the needle with heavy grit sand paper, back and forth on the shaft. Not around the shaft. Use a course grit emery board to form the poppers and VERY LIGHT pressure.
Good luck.

I was looking at your rig to make foam poppers with a dremel. I've tried this but I can't get the foam to stay spinning when i try to form it. Any hints would be great. I use a lot of foam ear plugs. Where do you get your leg material for your poppers?
Thanks
Jim

As a matter of fact this is the first time I'm trying the nail polish on the eyes. After I painted them, I coated them with rubber based cement. Gonna see how they hold up in the water.
