Which reminds me...Does anyone have any advice for ice fishing Bluegills? I don't know anyone up here that ever does it. Walleye, perch and pike are king up here in the winter...well all year, but especially in the winter.
That's a little too far for me Richard. But be sure to let us know how you do.
I'm champing at the bit to try some hard-water bluegill fishing this year. The few times I've been ice fishing in the past it's always been for perch and walleye. But I put together my own ice set-up over the summer, so now I can go where I want instead of being at the mercy of my buddies and what they want to fish for.
It is a gill, I "spiced" the photo a little bit with a filter...:) Caught both the fish under a bobber with a 1/64th ounce fly jig tipped with a power bait wiggler. It's my go to bait, I've caught thousands of panfish on it over the years. I'll have to put pictures up in a blog sometime... I was out for a couple hrs with my kids yesterday and found some gills. Water is still only 65 degrees here but that hasn't stopped the bulls from making nests and start the spawning process. Water is to cold for them to really get going yet tho... Hope you had a good day yesterday!
By the way...nice fish your young 'un has there! Is the bottom one a gill? It looks really orange, but maybe that is just an "optical illusion" from the sun or something?
Yep, same here. It's was a LOOOOOOONG winter followed by a cool spring. And, it's been a very wet spring, too. Seems like it rains every third day or so.
I'm going to head out tomorrow with some new floats and jigs made by BBG member Carl Hendrix. I'm on my way outside to get some nightcrawlers to tip them with right now. Hopefully I will be posting some nice gill pics tomorrow!
It's been a cool spring after a long winter (as you may have experienced as well Mike) but when the water temps stay in the 60's for a month that translates into STELLER panfishing! So far it has been a great year! Outside of my favorite lake having a fish kill and not finding any panfish there yet, but that has forced me to look at new lakes and new options. Here are some pics from a new lake I tried with my daughter last week...
Here is my biggest Minnesota Blue Gill to date. Caught this 10incher in June of 2011 on lake Vermilion. It took me 6 years of fishing here in Mn to finally hit the 10" mark, but it wasn't for lack of trying! Alright guys....y'all gotta be as anxious as I am for the opportunity to get out this spring, post your pictures and show it! :-)
Shot in the dark.
I'm Rochester MN for the next 2 weeks and an looking for someone to go Ice fishing with.
Give me a call 309-287-1425
Thanks, Tim
