Thanks for the interest Bobby, I catch quite a few gar in extreme Southeastern Virginia and the rivers and lakes I fish in North Carolina....I have to dig up some of the pictures and add them.....I caught a 12 pound gar in 2009 fishing in Lake Mattamuskeet on the culverts.....that got interesting to land him.......Thanks for joining Bobby!
Shoe-pic and Sock-a-lay....
Awesome! I would've never learned either one anyplace but here!
Thanks guys!
Choupique is pronounced as follows Tony...."Shoe-Pic"...Often you hear something like..."A dam shoe-pic tore up my rig or I thought I had a nice bass then I realized it was a dam shoe-pic"......
Okay david, same scenario as "sacalait"......
How do you pronounce that?
@ Tony - I first knew the bowfin as 'mudfish,' somewhat less classy than even dogfish.
But nowadays, I prefer the Cajun name for the fish - "Choupique."
These fish predate human kind and are true prehistoric survivors. They deserve a name befitting their long and storied heritage. 'Choupique' works.
In Indiana, a lot of anglers' refer to Bowfin as Dogfish.
My nephew Dan wanted a big bass something fierce but nobody was surprised when we netted another big bowfin in Tulls Bay....Often winner of last place in the beauty contest, these fish are known as Cypress Bass, Cypress Trout, Grindle, Choupique, Mudfish and many other names depending on what part of the country anglers cathch them.....They 're alot like riding a bull as once the hook is set you're often just along for the ride.........
