Liking the 15#/4dia. Power Pro line for Catfishing ! Very sensitive Line ,no memory .Strong to lift the fish up to 5# or more over a wall .Palomer Knot to hook .

Carl, don't get me started!

I went out this morning, to the same lake I fished last weekend.  The launch's parking lot was freaking full!  There were two trucks/trailers parked in the ditch!

Then, when the tourney was over, they all came back to the launch.  Over a dozen boats.  There was one other kayaker fishing in that area besides me.  A couple of these tourney fishers were polite enough to come back without a wake, but most of them came blasting back at W.O.T.  Unfortunately, no speed limits employed in the launch area.

I did go down to 1 lb test with a super ultralight rod and reel, but I did this mostly to see how it felt and also thinking it might allow longer casts and possibly give more action to my jigs.  The lake I fish used to be crystal clear, but in the past 10 years or so it has more of a green color and visibility is way down to about 6 to 8 feet.  (You can see panfish nests at about that depth if you have on Polaroid sunglasses.)  You could use 4 lb test mono or co-polymer, but your casting distance would be shorter than using 2 lb line.  Also with the 1 lb test line, you have to play out the larger Bluegills and drag-pulling Redears for a longer amount of time so they won't break your line, but this does put a lot of stress and lactic acid build up in the fish, making for a healthy release less likely.  Me and several other local panfishermen use nothing but 2 lb. test line and have not had any large Bluegill  actually break the line, unless of course there is a nick in the line.  Now when we hook into a large catfish or carp or even a good-sized Largemouth, that gets kind of scary.  But with lots of patience and a good reel with a smooth drag, even these big fighters can be landed..

CRAPPIE LINE AS A TIPPET WITH IT;;;; ONLY TIME I PICK UP A SPINNING ROD;; IS WHEN A PREADTOR FISH;; IS HARRASSING MY BELOVED BLUE GILL !  I HAVE CAUGHT SEVERAL;; 20 POUND PLUS; HYBIRDS STRIPE ON THAT LINE;; NOT TO MENTION SOME NICE BASS;; CATFISH;;;  IT DOES GET--- INTERESTING AT TIMES ON A FLY ROD !!

I believe So said he was using the Proline series for the 2lbs, and a few ice line series from Berkeley. I may be wrong. It's been a while, and tons of info being absorbed since then.

Ken brought up an interesting info for Gliss. Never got a chance to play with it. The lowest I've gone down to is 2lbs mono or flouro. I had to order the lines from online.

Carl, remember big guy, you can move forward with Gliss or the nano lines if you need to experiment. It'll be a wee while for me to fully settle in at the new location, but the fun is just starting.

Here in Michigan I find it nearly impossible to fish with monofilament down to 2# test. Mainly because of the weeds that infest the lakes …. The biggest problem is chara or musk grass that blankets the bottom of the lakes in thicknesses up to two feet thick. Set the hook into anything over a 8” b.gill they bury themselves thick into the grass that 8# line has a hard time pulling out.

Years ago when I moved up here to mid Michigan I used an outfit that had 2# ice line that could cast a tiny jig well… I used the set-up off the dock on my mother’s lake… hook a nice fish i had clear water to fight them. Up here not so much. If I wanted  to tag fish I had to fish around structure, lily pads, stickups, laydowns and bridge pillars. I was also breaking the 2# mono setting the hook into panfish! In order to cast the tiny jigs in my waters I had to fish thinner and stronger. I went from the thinnest spider-wire to ice braids and finally settling on GLISS at 8# test with a 2# mono diameter. Just a few days ago i pulled a 5# 22” LMB from 2 foot of musk grass with the Gliss… it would have been a heartbreak lost fish with the 2# mono or florocarbon. The 2 choices for me were to throw the light jigs out there with a bobber and stronger line or go thin and strong with GLISS, Nanofil or coated braids.
