It's simply amazing how when my wife and I are bank fishing some jerk wants to park right in front of us. REALLY? out of alllll the surface acres out there Y'all gotta park here?

Anymore I'll ask them if they were born an Ahole or just developed into one. They'll cuss and fuss and blow outta there. 15 min later the BG are settled down and biting again.

YUP I'VE RUN INTO it myself , but not much anymore cause I"m half deaf and the other half don't care what they think. Also it was usually associated with bass fisherman and don't do much of that anymore either. One time my buddy and I used to fish from a canoe allllllll the time , before I got a bigger boat, and were always in someones way on the lake. Course they couldn't use their bass boats were we were anyway. Always fished the thickest weed beds we could find .

One guy said it ain't fair as we were catching em on the surface with Plummer Frogs, and Jitterbugs . I said sure it is , get rid of that huge thing you think you need to catch fish and get something simple , like this here Canoe !!!!!
Course they started talking trash and we just laughed at em , gets em every time .......

david that is the norm at lake springfield us   bank fisherman are stupid and trashy .while the wanna be's with the fancy boats and over priced gear think they are the king and queens of the lake.

HHHHHHHHHHA HHHHHHHHHA GOOD ONE RICHARD ! MY KIND OF GUY , YOU MUST BE FROM ILLINOIS !!!! YUP YOU ARE AN OLD FART NOW RICHARD !!!!! THAT'S A COMMON practice up here when we run across the fancy crowd that mainly is in too big a hurray to go to the next spot . NO TIME FOR EM TO RELAX !!
YOU are much nicer to them folk than I am up north. They never take ya up on the offfer , JUST BRING THAT BOAT OVER HERE , GET OUT AND WE'LL HASH THIS OUT ....... THEY usually shut up but never come over......Really ticks em off when ya start laughing at em ....

its pretty funny when you can shut up a know it all.i was fishing  a leech weightless i was tossing it under a huge shadow by a old tree  yes it was a rough spot to fish . but i was catching cats and gills and bass non stop.and this boat pulls up and i was lectured on the finer points of bass fishing and anything related .all the while i was reeling in fish.nothing big and then i asked him do you catch fish with all this knowledge or do you just toss that huge jig around for exercise?iwas given the finger and a few not so nice words.but i couldnt help it but i asked him if he wants some leeches and chicken livers before he goes.the couple fishing behind me were cracking up it gives me that warm fuzzy feeling when i can make someones day or just tick them off lol.

GOOD IDEA SCRUFFY I MUST SAY !!!!!! SAFETY PIN !!! YA TONY ya hit that one on the head buddy with the constant , but slow refinements to the entire idea of fish gear and methods....

I don' t follow the trade magazines much anymore and there is obviously lllllots of new gear to Heat Up Debates about this an that . I know you like to take the minimalist approach and here here, that's a sound idea.

Yup can't remember the last time I saw a horsehair line or other antique items that pertain to fly fishing .
Leo is the reel deal when it comes to high tech gear, what's he use , Old Wonderods in lots of instances. I can't fault the new spinning reels however and the one item on them that has made such an improvement is the instant stop on the retrieve , not many loops placed in a line then when the reel rotor rolls backwards a 1/2" or so.

I"m going to get , SHORTLY , some vintage Dam Quick reels and maybe even use one . Them and the Alcedo Microns were probably the best Ultra lIght reels made anywhere at any time. Common complaints with the Quicks was that they were heavy . We'll see on that in a week or so and will put up some pics here or in vintage tackle. I owned several of the larger quicks in the old days and remember them as being a work horse , but weighed like a Clydesdale too !!!!!

One of the hallmarks of a bona fide old fart is his stubborn appreciation for what was good before. He may have every new refinement there is and that's fine. I got plenty myself, so I'm with you there.

But every now and then, he'll go out with just a cane pole and a safety pin - because he knows he CAN make it work.
It's a right of passage, that moment. The glory that is being an OLD FART is bestowed there and then.

Indeed, if we Old Farts were to have a logo, I'd suggest the humble safety pin as our image.

I think of fishing as a progression of refinements, rather than something entirely new and original. How many here are still using horsehair for line, and whittling hooks out of bone? Granted these are extreme examples, but the fact remains that they caught fish back yonder in them "ole days".....but, they have since given way to newer, more practical and efficient items.

This trend will undoubtedly continue, albeit perhaps in smaller increments.Refining the methodology forms the backbone of the commercial tackle industry.

I always remember that people still caught fish in the "old days."
No reason why the methods won't still work.

The one key improvement that I've seen develop is the sonar, or fish finder. This one tool gives us eyes to see beneath the water.
But aside from that singular innovation, the act of fishing still boils down to a couple tried and true concepts:

- Place a bait that appeals to fish according to the season.
- Do this where the fish you seek are located.
- Use enough of the right gear to facilitate the catch.

Us old guys grasp these subtleties and make the best of them. Some might call it skill. I think of much as Leo does, as wisdom.
