Do you love big bluegill?
I had the tremendous opportunity to do a little fishing while visiting my mother in Alabama. The weather was great, snakes were in hideout mode, the banks were pretty safe. My cousin took me to this…Continue

Tried Pole fishing yesterday at my local NJ bluegill pond. Used my 12 foot B&M POLE, 2 lb test and size 16 hook and micro float. I was able to attact gills to the area with groundbait of bread…Continue

Dwayne -Try swinging out over the water in a tire tube! Let me know how you do!
Bank fishing here in Southern IL has really came to a stand still. High water is hurting the fishing. I am only doing good around docks
Ive been looking for one, John.
David the looping and twisting is a problem with open faced spinning reels too. I take out the kinks with a 'Twist Out' after use:
@ Dwayne - I was thinking the hair clips could be mounted at the forward end to hold the rods in the holes. The requirement is for a mounting that allows the clips to come off for replacement - but still hold the rod's business end firmly.
This sort of key holed rod holder usually uses a bungee cord to secure the rod ends, at least the ones Ive seen do. But I'm intrigued with your clip idea.....
My favorite spin casting reels are the older Johnson models. I have several different types of these, and they share all the same good points of the Zebco's.
They also have a handle shaft mounted star drag, as opposed to the spool friction tab the Zebco's use. It is an improvement, IMHO.
The one bad thing about any spin cast reel is their tendency to twist and loop your line, but its a trade off. I use nothing heavier than 6 lb in them, and I have one with 2 lb test.
They aren't real good at "delicate" delivery, either - for that you need a spinning reel. Small stuff just isn't their forte. But I find that I go to them probably 60% of the time for bank fishing.
4# is what I use on the 11's. the rods they are used as jigging poles.
I dont think its safe to use lighter than 4# test with the crummy drags on these reels. But they will still get use ice fishing and in the dark where tangles are too frustrating.
John, the drags are terrible on the 11's. I have not found a underspin, that has a good drag system. I try and use old zebco 33's. imo great little gill reels. The new 33's are junk, i own a couple. A buddy of mine swears by the 33 underspin, little heavy on 12ft crappie rod, but no problems.
