Sinking lines? 5 Replies

i just started fly fishing last year, so I have only used a floating line. If i wanted to fish clousers and streamers, will they get down ok with floating line, or is a sinking line the way to go?

I have fly fished for many years but I have never caught a crappie on the fly. A lot on minnows but never on a fly. I checked in to learn how to catch a few on the long rod.Continue

Mad Cracker, The electric chicken was a fly I mad to imitate a rubber tail with The bottom being Chartruese and the top pink !!!

The hybrid chicken just had a chartruese maribou tail, body was pink estez and a pink maribou wing!!!! The hybrid was just a name I gave it to set it apart from the original!!!! It was a sorry picture of the hybrid!!!!!

Had some pretty decent luck today, found a grassy point on the local pond and pulled 5 good specks off of it, and missed a few more. The biggest was only about 10". They were taking a Brown Wooly Bugger stripped sloooow. Over all it was a pretty good time :)

OK CFRs-- One easily sees that crappies bite a number of flies after scanning this group's postings. This spring has been a troubling tease, however, here in northeast NC,and southeast VA.Warmth a few weeks ago, which was sufficient to send the big girls into the feeding shallows, has been steadily erased with the chill of 30s-40s-50s,especially whenever a guy has time-off to try em.The days where real warmth sends that surface temp up through the mid 50s toward 60* can be golden, yet there were more of those in late Feb and early March than we've had lately.Trips to a regional trophy crappie lake a couple weeks back had the potential to produce just a few,but with an high percentage of BIG fish (1 3/4 to 2 LB'ers).Trouble is those shallow fish in chilly water were reluctant to chase ANYTHING,so presentation has been purely vertical, meaning I had to dip tiny tied bug-jig flies by the feeding cover in the backs of certain coves. Now though, the fish have worked back out to deeper waters to await more warmth, which looks to arrive this week and Sunday.I project a torrid flurry of fish movement will manifest, and I believe some fish will quickly become vulnerable to the intermediate line with just about any of our favorite subsurface flies.I am terribly excited at this prospect and will report on this board things I am dreaming about now,but which I hope will come true. I know I am among friends here!     Thanks for being here!

These flies have been taking crappie over the last 2 or 3 weeks. Worked on sinking line along the weed line, in a strip and pause retreive!!!!

I dont think the specs are really biting just yet from what I have seen and heard. January and Feb. should be great this year.
