Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I realize there are variables, but what's the average jig weight used for crappie and gill? Just need somewhere to start. I'll be fishing lakes.

Thanks

Everyone will have different answers. I love finesse fishing so I throw usually small jigs start from 1/16 and 1/32 and down from there. Now when it get windy you may have to go up in weight but as a general rule for my weight I do love 1/32 oz jigs. Will the others catch fish yes but my comfort zone is 1/32 oz for the slow fall. GOOD FISHIN....

Good question Bruce........this one is debated quite often but here's my two cents and I fish jigs under a float 90% of the year.........

Crappie........I like 1/32 ounce almost the entire year with the exception of peak season in the spring from March through April in my region of North Carolina when I employ a 1/16 ounce for big aggressive fish and large predators.......This provides me a chance to catch those big fish when they strike.....this year I caught nine largemouth over six during this period and two of those were approaching eight pounds......1/32 is my go to size the rest of the year even during the colder months, I don't like the hook set ratio on smaller jigs with suspended crappie.........

Bluegill.......With an abundance of larger Florida strain gills and swamp crackers I like a 1/32 ounce jig almost year round sizing down only when water temps dip below 50 degrees.......often employing a 1/64th or 1/80th ounce jig for less active fish.........on very rare occasion I will go all the way down to 1/200th for my coldest applications with only skim ice the last twenty years.........

Good luck Bruce and remember this will be trial and error.......you may find a smaller jig more favorable in your applications.....other conditions will be a factor as Dick suggested in an earlier post but my personal inventory includes a total of more than 20.000 jigs in various colors in the 1/32 ounce slot.........

bluegill-1/32 oz with #6 hook most of the time in spring and summer.  1/64 if i need to fish it extra slow.  usually by july and august the bigger gills are out on the ledge by then mixed in with bass thats when i break out drop shot or 1/12 oz spoon.  i cant do much winter fishing anymore due to flooding but when i can i try to get on the flats and fish drop shot with a midge pattern or segmented ice worm usually in feb or early march.

crappie-1/16oz for trolling and 1/8th oz charlie brewer slider for casting or jigging brushpiles.  for shooting docks i like 1/32 oz.

Thanks, All.

I'll be fishing mine under a float. I won't even bring up favorite colors, ha, ha! When I was in my 20s I'd cast a jighead Mr. Twister under a float and twitch it back to me. That seemed to work okay as far as I can remember. The gills and crappie took turns.
