Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

As I turn the last page of the “SLIP’S 2017 LOGS, STATUS AND STRATEGIES” log book on an astounding year of angling… I think back on the initial strategies and goals for the year. I wanted to tag at least (4) Trophy Master Angler Panfish and that would include one thru the ice which would be a PB using that method. I ended up with 2 trophy P.Seeds thru the ice with a PB at 9.8" as well as(13) total Master Anglers thru the rest of the open water season!

To accomplish this feat I would greatly scale down my presentations to micro lite equipment… rods, reels, lines and baits. Careful considerations of lines were incorporated into my methods which would not exceed 2# mono diameter…and super lines that would approach 8# test or above to handle the trophy quality of fishes sought.

I would also aim to make my time on the water more productive by timing the trips with solunar periods… majors and minors on New and Full Moons. I've discovered big fish follow the moon… period! 2017 proved that especially considering the hard water Ice Period. I was on the big fish spots on the peak periods and it paid off!... BIGly!!!

I think I coined a phrase “Fishing for the Numbers by the Numbers” by incorporating all methods and strategies to gain my odds on the water for numbers as well as numbers of trophies. By the end of the day and all the numbers were tallied for 2017 I broke many records for the Master Angler Program in at least 2 counties.

I’m hoping for an even better season for 2018 and success for the fishermen following BBG!

...the day's catch snapshot picture folder dump... major period outlined in green box... notice the quality of catches in this time frame relates to Major.Period (intraday)

as the Lull.Period is fished mainly small fish then a low light trigger (evening) activates a Master Angler B.Gill and Bonus LMB. times are revealed in snap names military time

...it's the weekend... launches will be busy... I just caught 3 Master Anglers in two trips/3 days... what to do where to go... do I beat the "not Dead" horse and go to the same lake on the same spot during the intraday solunar Major.Period  . or do I take the skills and move it to a less public lake?

the decision will be made at the end of my driveway... lol

20180616-decided to take the kayak for a spin

Left the car and Jon boat at home and dragged the kayak to the launch… set a timer… in the water paddling in 13 mins!

Water temps were in the mid to upper 70’s and water slightly tinted from the storms the day previous.

I took a few setups with me… 2 long casters and a slip float setup

I paddled close to the lakes perimeter edge and could not find any large b.gill activity or nesters… in fact I saw a couple mid teens spawning LMB s… still!

I fan casted a large shallow inside turn next to the road rip rap and ended up with no shallow bites. I casted towards a larger fish going after a dragonfly and the fish immediately went after the float. A second cast the fish hit the waxie and started a nice battle. A very nice fight on the ul panfish equipment. Of course the 6# braid (1.5# mono diameter)held tight and the fish was quickly subdued photoed and quickly CPR’ed.

I quickly moved to some other shoreline areas and found no other slip/float/waxie biters.

Moving on to the bridge and footing structures finding a handful of small to medium biters highlighting a 9” R.Bass taking the hot Allen Morgan tungsten fly in pink.

I got my exercise in as well as a few tugs and called it a day.

today's picture folder...

Dude, you're one golden tan man. How are the sizes relative to last year?

the lake I was currently fishing with the kayak has generally disappointed this year… It appears they are doubling down on the herbicides and weed control and it is drastically affecting the fish and fishing… a couple other lakes are really surprising the heck out of me though… it may simply be getting more familiar with them year after year.

20180617-had a great time fishing a short trip with family!

Luckily we found a successful opportunity at a local private lake with some great swim/fishing weather.

The trip was planned during a Major.Period so the fish were in a biting mood especially considering Maverick learning to fish the jig.

Once out on the BOW it didn’t take long for Maverick to connect with some decent Crappies with his new spincast rig and the Mid-Minnow.

Katie followed suit with her PB LMB at 16”.

I tagged a near trophy B.Crappie of just under 14” on the Long-Cast/.016 oz Jig/1” Apex Shad.

The B.Crappies were cooperating with the bite as well as the B.Gills in about 9-0’ of water.

With a short break for swimming we ended up with over 40 fish in about 1.5 hrs of fishing… not bad for a hot spring day!

...picture folder dump for the day

Great production. How deep was the BOW?
