Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Does anybody tie foam spiders? If so, what size hook and what size bodies are normally used for pan fish? What colors work best?

Thanks,

Bruce

I have lots of foam bodies and it weird the way they size them. Netcraft has 1, 2, and 3 and looking at a similar product form a different vendor I see #12. Well go with netcraft since that were I get most my stuff. There size 1 they suggest #10 hook. there size 2 next size larger they suggest #10. there size 3 they suggest #8. Now you can also go up and down on the hook size nothing written in stone. Tie a few up and enjoy some top water action its a blast.

Hey Dick,

Can you post a photo? I know you've probably posted spiders before, but I'd appreciate a refresher photo.

Well, I just check Netcraft and they have only size 1 available. Guess what size I'm buying, ha!

BRUCE;; DICK TABBERT TIES REALLY GREAT LOOKING SPIDERS;; ALSO;; ALLEN MORGAN AND TOOTY  MAKE SOME AS WELL.  I MAKE SOME ; LEGION BREAM KILLERS ON OCCASSION;; NOT FOAM SPIDERS IN THOSE;; BUT EXCELLENT TO USE EITHER AS DROPPERS ON POPPING BUGS;; OR BY THEMSELVES...  GENERALLY;; HOOKS SIZE IN THE 10;S OR 8;S PREFFERED IN SPIDERS

I haven't tied any spiders.  I generally tie a pattern called a "Gurgle-Pop", which looks more like a beetle, but the colors don't resemble any beetle I've ever seen.

Would you post a picture and pattern?

I'd love to give you the link.  However, websites that use "Frames" make it hard to get the actual URL for the page.

Go to flyanglersonline dot com.  In the upper left corner, there is a search bar.  Search for "Gurgle-Pop".  It's the first link that pops up.  Very, very, easy pattern to tie.  Because of the cupped face, it will act just like a Pop-R when tied in bigger sizes.  It chugs, gurgles, and pops if tugged hard enough.  I typically tie these in three sizes.  A size 12 scud hook, a size 8 dry fly hook, and a size 2 Eagle Claw plain-shank hook (think a Baitholder but without the barbs on the shank).  I like to use the size 12's for general panfish fishing.  A size 8 is a good all-around fly.  Small enough that they will catch the bigger sunnies (especially BG x GS Hybrids), but still big enough to catch a Bass.  The size 2 plain shank is intended for Bass.  I've even done a couple on size 2/0 Eagle Plain Shank hooks.  One was all-black, intended for Bass at night, and the other was a white/red configuration, intended for Stripers in the river.  Haven't caught anything on those 2/0's.

Thanks. Do they sell only black and white? It seems that's all I can find. I'll check Netcraft.

Black and white is the norm on spiders. I guess you can look around and maybe find some different colors or just buy white and color them with a felt marker like I do.

Dick Tabbert ties great spiders, so do Leo and McScruff!

Bruce you'll have to give me a little time. I always just tied them never thought of a pattern. Bruce if you need to get a hold of me feel free to give me a call anytime I will answer the questions if I know the answers of coarse.
