Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

So, I go and get myself all worked up about some great Summertime Gill fishing.... and now its feeling like Summer is never going to get here ? :-(

I've lived in Nor Cal for 42 of my almost 45 years, and I have "NEVER" seen such cool, cloudy weather persist, into the middle of June ! Only 70 degrees today, and the extended forcast just keeps showing more of the same.

If Clear Lk. were a lot closer, I'd go check it out anyway, but I'm guessing the water temp is in the low 60's.... and I can't imagine any great Gill fishing until we have some good, solid, 90 degree days, and water temps in the low 70's...

Note: I can just imagine guys here, from other states saying, "Oh, low 60's is perfect ! 70 degree air temps ?!?! Wow ! It's already hot in Nor Cal" :-) LOL Uhhhh..... No. This is not normal for Nor Cal.

So, I guess I'm going to have to keep resorting back to the big green Sunfish until our weather finally warms up... if it ever does.

That's where I'm at. But I'm still hoping to post some good trips + photos here ASAP.

Peace,
Fish

PS, My underwater video was a semi-success, on the intial run, 2 days ago :-) I got a 4 lb Bass to follow my wake bait up to the camera, eyeing it :-) Then I managed to fight a 4.9 lb Smallmouth up to the camera, after hooking it on a crawler :-)
I think the underwater housing is going to work good on the Gills, if I can find them in clear water.

Peace...

We have lot of rain so far this year since last March.... almost double above the normal! Below average temperture! Last Saturday, North Dakota got 2 to 3 inch of snow and part of the northern Wisconsin don't even hit high 50 degrees!
Last week that I look at one of my favorite lake and bluegills don't even start on nest yet!
Hope the weather getting better soon!
Hey Chris...I actally recorded bluegills spawning in one local pond on April 25 this year, which is the earliest ever for my region in central Maryland, and I have followed the bluegill spawn dates for almost 30 years. We haven't had any 'hot' weather, but warm nights have managed to keep the shallows around 70 F and as a result many fish are still bedding and the fishing has been excellent. Pumpkinseeds, redears and bluegills are all spawning in my area at this time and it make for great panfishing. Hope things warm up for you!
Hey Jim, looking at our long term weather, it appears that we will finally be climbing (back) into the 80's this coming week. So, I'm planning a trip to Clear Lk. next Wednesday. And I'm hoping for 70 degree water temps.
Sure, I'll have plenty of redworms, mini crawlers, and mealies..... But you can be sure I'll be ready to fish for the "big green ones" if the Bluegills don't want to play :-)
In fact, I might even bring some Carp bait ;-)

Hoping the water is pretty clear though, as I'd like to get some underwater photos too....

Will post the results.

Peace,
Fish
the rain is always with us here in louisiana, but i can not rember when we have had so much wind, and cool weather here this late. it is just getting hot here ,but the wind will not go away.
maybe there is something to be said about global warming, this is the strangest weather i have seen in my 61 yrs,but the fish seem to love it.
