Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

ANTIQUE ROD & REEL LIBRARY .com  is a site I've been helping on lately and is very interesting. What it is , is a reference source for people to try and identify any old fly rods, reels etc. that they have . For instance under the Shakepeare heading you 'll find many of the old bamboo rods from long ago and some of the history of them and who made em and when. Same thing for the Shakespeare Wonderods , which I am a contributor on . Very informative and useful site for some one trying to identify old rods and reels.
Hope someone on BBG finds it of value and when you have a chance check it out and you'll be surprized at the beautiful pics of some very nice to well used old bamboo rods.

Very interesting collection and info.

YOU WILL ENJOY THIS OLD ROD AGAIN LARRY!!!!!!!!!! Something about the old stuff that facinates me and also it's longevity is amazing to say the least!!

HEY LARRY,
GLAD TO HAVE HELPED YA!!!! I'M vvvvvvvvvvvvery familiar with your rod you have as I've had probably 6 or so over the years and was always one of my favorites to use. Does yours have 3 guides plus the tip top and wrapped in maroon thread? That wrap is called professional by Shakespeare and was very popular for many years. 6' length or shorter rods are much sought after by collectors as they are great using rods and I personally like em alot. I wonder what caused the flat spot to begin with?
Doesn't make much difference anyway as you are going to use it and good luck and glad to have helped is some small way.
The antique rod and reel library has many of my fly rods posted on it as I was a contributor to the site . Look under manufactures and in particular Shakespeare. Scroll half way down the page and you'll see some of my rods and descriptions on there and so forth.
TIGHT LINES LARRY!!!

HEY LARRY, THOSE 7' SHAKESPEARE FLY RODS are a very sought after item now and vvvvvvvvvvvery collectible!!!!!! I am fortunate to have many of those here and are a really great rod and Leo has one of mine and loves it I think. Ya know what's really amazing Larry is that we have come full circle on the rods and now lllllllots of folks prefer the old glass to modern techno stuff.  In some applications it far exceeds graphite or boron as a forgiving casting tool. I have llllllllots of old rod pics on my page and somemore in the VIntage Tackle group on here. By the way I have two groups myself on here THE GOOD OLE DAYS and Fiberglass Rod Fanatics and you should consider joining em both. I think you'll find interesting blogs on both of em...............

I got the 6' and the 7', and gave the 7' away to my father-in-laws as an early Christmas present. We both love them. I had a chance to test both rods out several times. Love the feel of the rods in my brutish hands. I have a 8' graphite with me as well. Let just say that I feel like I'm going to break this rod to high heaven the way I used it, doing some crazy and wacky casting. I reserved the graphite for my micro-spinning reel now as I troll on my pontoon/float tube. I use the Wonderod to go to town on the water. I'm fearful in using the 2wt as the masters here are using. I will indeed break those skinny leg sticks.

Leo don't be afraid to use the two weight!!!!! A little bit of knowledge of using drag goes along way and after all you are probably useing a light weight tippet anyway so the 2 weight should be ok.........

It's not the light weight line that I'm worrying about Tooty. More of the rod's body structure. I've played with a few 2wt rods at Bass Pro. It feels like a long fragile pencil in my hands. The fly rodding master snickered at me, asking me how it felt. I replied in full honesty that I may break that thing as I do a loop cast while I'm on the float. I saw my brutish strength holding and play-false casting. He agreed. We laughed.

If I can break a salt water rod while chasing stripers, trust me, I will break the 2wt like it's a candy stick without knowing. LOL

LARRY PLEASE FEEL FREE TO POST PICS OF THE ROD!!!!!!! WE'D ALL LOVE TO SEE EM AND MANY THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

LEO WHAT FLY ROD MASTER SNIKERED AT YA? Must have been someone at BASS PRO and I guess everyone has their opinion on all things related to fly fishing. If it was the dude at BP I know were I wouldn't be spending any more money. Sometimes they forget that they may be talking to someone who actually knows more than they do . I ran into this many times as a weapons instructor and especially dealing with law enforcement folk, I could go on forever............

I would love to play with the 2wt on the water Larry. Unless I can find an inexpensive 2wt from Craiglist to play with first, I'm not about to sink my teeth into getting something more expensive until I can master the art of delicate hands. This is why I didn't pursue surgical tech during my studies. I did see a few 2wt and 3wt, but they were sold before I could even get into contact with the local sellers.

Ya know I'm really looking forward to your knowledge and input Larry and understand the merits of 1-3 weight rods. Old glass rods just weren't ever meant to be that light or so forth.
I primarily use a 7'9" wonderod of some model and they are all 5 weights and am going to add a 8' and an 8'6" to the mix this year. I fish in and near alot of weeds and have to get em headed in the right direction in a hurry .  I will also be throwing streamers this coming year early spring for crappies and will need  a 6-7 weight for that class of fly........

Thanks Larry and I look forward to your membership in the good ole days and photos of the rod!
