Do you love big bluegill?
Sunday 3/18 a buddy and I took his canoe into a CT lake. We went directly to the same area we were hitting crappie and largemouths at last year in early April, which is a shallow cove where a brook feeds in that has plenty of marshy structure.
I stuck with a 7cm firetiger Rapala Original Floater while my buddy played around with small live shiners on 1 rod and a 5cm silver Rapala Original Floater.
Topwater retrieves with the Original Floaters is what had the fish going. Total between the 2 of us was 28 calicoes and 13 largemouths. 16 crappie for me and 12 for my buddy and 8 largemouths for me and 5 for my buddy.
While lightly twitching the Original Floaters on the surface, imitating an insect or injured minnow, those calicoes would jump mouth first right out of the water and grab the lure. We got to see plenty more do the jump without grabbing the hook.
