Stalking the wild Hybrid.....

Guys, I need some help. I'm going to try and gather data on Hybrid Bluegill (HBG), of the variety most often stocked into ponds and lakes...a cross between a male Bluegill, and a female Green Sunfish.

What I'm looking for, is a length and weight measurement. If there's any BBG members who have a digital scale and fish waters where HBG reside, I would be very grateful if you would provide me with some data on your catches....I'm interested in anything and everything you could share…

Tandem Jig Rig for Pannies (Revised)

This year (2013) ,in June and then again in October and November  , I've tried tandem jig rigs a few times . With and without added spinners, they've  worked on Crappies ,Gills, Yellow and White Perch . With dropping temps in Fall, fish food is perhaps more scarce and yet the feeding activity level of the predators is still in high gear .This makes for a competitive feed and prime time for tandem rigs. Indeed, the only time I ever caught two fish at the same time on one lure was in October .…

1" Berkley Gulp Minnow

Have had very good gill catches using the 1" chartreuse shad Berkley Gulp Minnow this late fall season in souther MI, however finding them to be expensive at 3.99/12 in current packaging.  Was able to purchase same item in a 2oz jar for 5.99 with approx. 30 count.  Are there any less expensive alternatives out there in a like manner of product.

Texas River Bum Double Haul Master's Tournament.

Last weekend was the TRB Master's tournament that me and a buddy of mine made it into. Woke up at 5 to be at the pre tournament briefing and to pick out our boats and the stretch of water we fished. Me and my buddy had the same stretch of water at the South Llano river state park. We make it there and get on the water around 8:30. A cold front rolled in the night before, and by the time we made it to the water it was about 44 degrees with 15 mph winds. The odds were definitely not in our…

Angling With Children

On fishing with children

“…supply them with a light bamboo rod, and attach at a joint one third from the top end a very fine silk or linen line. Wind it a few times round the rod, and cast two half hitches over the top end.

Then affix a float according to the depth of the water, so that the bait will sink within six inches of the bottom. About a foot above the hook fasten to the line from one to three split shot.

Let the hook be the minnow size, and make the bait a…

The Shiner - As Table Fare?

"THE SHINER

This tiny white fish, with scales of metallic luster, is from two to four inches long, and the best bait-fish in the fresh waters of America. It is found in most of the brooks, rivers, and lakes of the temperate zone.

A greedy biter, it requires only a bit of angle-worm covering the point of a minnow-hook and it may be taken as fast as it can be drawn out with a supple willow wand. While fishing in rivers for black bass, I have moored one end of my…

Damsel Nymph - The Wannabe Damsel!

All this damsel nymph tying of late - THANKS, Jedi Dick - led me to experiment.

Combining the usual materials with whatever was on hand, I came up with a raggedy looking damsel nymph simulation. Considering how shabby it turned out, I'm officially calling it the Wannabe Damsel.

Materials

Hook - #12 Nymph Hook

Thread - Olive, 210 Denier flat waxed nylon

Tail - Olive marabou

Body - Woven chenille,…

STATS ON PUBLIC VS. PRIVATE BLUEGILL FISHERIES

Ok y'all, this will be a quick hit opener on the stats I have on quality bluegill waters in my region, as I am still reviewing the numbers as this blog will progress. But for now, here are some interesting statistics I have accumilated over the past 12 years concerning bluegills in my regional, or 'home' waters.

Of the 112 lakes/ponds that I have fished over the past 12 years, the number of lakes that have produced 8 inch or better sized bluegill ( my personal minimum for 'quality'…
