Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

.... in almost 30 years. It ain't much, but its the first. I made all the rookie mistakes, worst of which was trying to push the line out. "Let it flow off the rod, dummy!" I kept telling myself.
I also try and whip the rod, going to far on the back cast. But I'll get it.
Rod... 7' Olympic
Reel... Martin #60, DA
Line... midweight level line
Leader... 4x tapered
Tippet... 4lb fluoro
Fly... Jim Cosgrove Micro Popper.

I would have preferred a weight forward line, but this is what I had at the moment. Thanks, Jim Cosgrove!

PS got me some Tooty flies today...

A worthy accomplishment. One step at a time, no matter what the endeavour. Patience and persistence.

Thanks Mr. Dick. The truth is, fly fishing is about all there is remaining for me to spend fishing money on!

Allen - The rod is a fiberglass model, from the eighties. I dont know the weight because it is not labeled like that. It is actually a spin-fly rod, so my assumption it is average weighted, probably 5 wt.-ish.

I'm planning to get a 5wt., forward weighted line soon. Ive got some 4x tapered leaders on the way, so the line is next.

Carl- it is coming back to me. What I need to do is let it flow.... when I do that, the line lays out nice, the leader unloads just right.

Jim - thanks, buddy.

As soon as you get a chance, try to upgrade your line to a weight-forward Bass Taper. Little heavier taper, easier to cast.  What weight rod do you have?  Is it a stiff graphite, or a limber glass rod?
