Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I was wanting to thin out the 'gills some in this pond, so we kept the smaller ones we caught today. We released fifteen or twenty that were bigger than these - probably the biggest we landed was still an ounce or two under a pound though. I did lose one large fish that I got just enough of a glimpse of to confirm it was a bluegill, when it made its second drag-taking run and the hook pulled out - I would guess that fish went somewhere between 20 and 24 ounces, but that's just a guess. It was sizably bigger than any of the ones we caught.

I've never tried to manage a pond for bullhead.  Channel cats taste better and grow much faster, and are easy to source.  Though I personally feel bluegill are the best-eating fish there is.

This is how I think the GSF got into my pond, from the stream that is 200 yards or so down hill, and then it is 4 foot drop to the water or so.  The creek does not run and hardly holds water, but maybe when we get a ton of rain it allowed them to get there.

Who knows but with the HBG and CNBG, CC and LMB (plus us catching them for bait), they may not last long, or at least they will be out numbered some day.

They are good bait though so I hate to loose all of them, I may move some to a pond that can not keep anything else alive just to see if they will make it.  It is shallow and not sure these guys can even make it, may have to raise bullhead.

Do you know where I could source bullhead and what types I could or should use if I decide to go that route?  I have always wanted to know how they would take to feed and how large I could get one with feed, and if they would taste better if they were fed.

You're right, Zach, there are hybrids in the pond now, though they weren't officially stocked.  The pond that's a hundred yards down the hill was stocked with hybrids three or four years ago, so my theory is that they swam up the overflow during a high-water event.  There's a trickle running out of the upper pond all the time but it gets a little bigger when we have a lot of rain.

Looks like there may be a few HBG in the mix.
