Yup, time to stock the boxes. Of course, a lot of my time at the bench lately has been spent tying "experiemental" flies. Haven't really had a chance to fish them. Hopefully the weather will start to warm up here soon.
Allen - very nice - I see your getting ready for spring, summer and fall....
Sorry Jen don't know if you was talking to me or someone else.
Take that red bead, tie it in the middle and you have a black widow spider. One year I probably caught over 100 gill on it.
You can tie them on any size hook you want. I've done several on size 8 3xl hooks under the White River brand from BPS. I do have some size 6 4xl streamer hooks, but haven't tied any.
Recipe:
Hook: Mustad R74-9672 or equivalent (I'm actually using Conquer brand or Vicious Fishing brand size 4 bronze Cricket Hooks, almost identical to the 9674)
Weight: 8 turns of .030 lead wire
Thread: 70 denier Chartreuse
Eyes: Bead Chain tied on top of the hook, a few eye-lengths back, these are the dark finish.
Underwing: White bucktail, stacked on the tips.
Flash: 3 strands of Flashabou, cut in half, and tied to the hook behind the eyes, 1 strand of chartreuse Krystal Flash, cut in quarters, cut in half, and tied to the hook behind the eyes.
Overwing: Chartreuse bucktail
Throat: Red marabou, tied short and sparse.
The eye of the hook needs to be a down-eye. The Mustard R74-9672 is a down-eye hook, the cheap things I'm using need the eyes bent, easily done with a pair of forceps or pliars. If you use cheaper hooks, you might want to touch up the point.
With the eye position, and the eyes on the "top" of the hook, the fly will flip over in the water. Thus, I tie the fly upside-down. I insert the lead wire into the eye of the hook, leaving a bit for a tag, and make 7 turns. Clip the wire, then push it so the tag comes out of the eye. Using tweezers, make sure the tag wraps around the shank, and smooth out the cut ends. Slide the lead down to the bend.
Start the thread, wrapping about 3/4" down the shank from the eye. Wrap back up to a couple eye-lengths from the eye, and using the thread, make a couple "bumps" close together. Put the eye in between the bumps, and tie to the hook with some figure-eight wraps. Wind the thread to just behind the eyes, and slide the lead wire up the shank, over the thread you've wrapped on, up against the eyes. Wrap the thread around the lead a bit, and create a "bump" after the led to snug the lead up the eyes. At this point, I like to brush on some Sally Hansen's to secure the eyes and coat the lead to keep it from oxidizing.
Take a small pinch of White deer hair, and tie it on top of the lead, behind the eyes. Trim the hair just behind the eyes. Tie in the flashabou and krystal flash on the bottom of the lead, under the tie-in for the deer hair. Take a small pinch of Chartreuse deer hair, and tie it to the shank on the bottom of the lead, covering the tie-in for the flash. Keep winding the thread forward, and finish wrapping the chartreuse hair just in front of the eyes. Trim the remaining hair. Use the thread to start forming the head. When the head is about half-way formed, tie in the red marabou. Finish forming the head, whip finish, and coat with Sally Hansen's.
Hey I love the Clousers they have neat eye brows. If you don't mind I'll have to try a few. You say a #4 hook wonder if we can get it down to a # 6, Great stuff
Good looking hopper Allen
Allen good looking stuff and thanks for the info on the beads. I went to Micheal's a while back had a hand full of beads. There was about 30 people in line and one cashier and very slow on top of that so I set the beads and some other things I was going to get on a shelf and left. I'll have to try back. Thanks
And this is a nice bait ball of size 4, 4xl Clousers in Chartreuse over White with a little red marabou to imitate gills. Fly is designed to flip over in the water. DEADLY on White Bass, Striped Bass, Hybrid Striped Bass, and Skipjack in my waters. I have also caught a Sauger and a small Channel Cat on these.
