Ok, I've been fishing one of these for a couple weeks now, and I've caught all sorts of fish on it. Bluegill, Green Sunfish, BG x RE Hybrids, and a LMB. Because of the spun hair head, this fly…Continue

Hey Allen, no problem and if you need something you can't find , if I have it , it's yours.
David, thanks for the offer. I get paid tomorrow, so I'll probably go pick some up, along with a couple other things.
I did get a bodkin made. I did exactly as I planned, and it turned out rather nice. Haven't used it yet, though.
I forgot Allen I only use one size of hook and rubber leg material.
Leg material is Medium and hooks are #12 for the spiders. Light wire dry fly mustads.
Heck Allen they can't be that expensive at bass pro. Of course I haven't bought any for the last five years or so . If you need some let me know . I think I gave a buck a bag for the stuff and have it in many colors. Got enough here to make rubber legs from here to the moon and back.
Dick, thanks for the head's-up. I also have some size 12 hooks. I guess I'll start with that instead.
David, I'll have to look at Janns netcraft. I know I can get the rubber legs at my local BPS, but it ain't cheap. I mentioned the spinnerbait skirt, as I happened to find that a while back, and had it floating around in one of my tackle boxes.
Hey Allen,
You can buy rubber leg material from Janns netcraft . It used to come in 3 foot strips and about 48 legs wide. You just cut the strip to length , I usually make em about 3/4 inch, then pull the legs off of the strip . Hope it helps. Lot more economical than spinner bait tails.
Allen I'm just starting out like you well maybe with 2 more weeks experience but I will tell you my first rubber spiders I used to large of a hook and they tend to set very low in the water. I'm using a #12 fine wire hook for the large body spiders. I thought all you had to do was to tie the spider body on the hook but there is much more to it than that. I'm sure someone will get back with you but I wanted to put that out there for you. Good luck on the fly tying I have found it to be relaxing after I done a few.
Any tips on tying spiders? I've got a bunch of size 8 hooks, several colors of foam, thread, and even a rubber skirt from a bass-type spinner bait that I can use for the rubber legs.
I bought some "basting needles" today, and some "Cookie sticks". Basically, the cookie sticks are XXL size popsicle sticks. Paper, and most of them are hollow, just big enough to fit the needle. I'll cut one in half, glue a needle in, and once that dries, I'll use the top half for a sheath.
The package has 5 - 6 needles, and the cookie sticks have about 20. I can make more. I might even try to mount a needle in a dowel rod at a later date.
pin is tube? squeeze bottle? I think I had one similar and it stayed clogged up. bodkin is good you will need one any way and you can make one from a big needle (darning), or similar this is one I made from a piece of deer antler but a piece of dowel rod would work just fine. I drilled a small hole in the tip for use as a half hitch tool.
