Welcome Jim and I hear ya ,good stuff!  This was a good find .Been reading up on Smallmouth fishing in the June 2006 issue of Field and Stream and reading the available fishing excerpt from Taps tips .

I recently added a Sports Afield Compilation to my library, much like this TapsTips.
Just full of goodies and tidbits, most of which I forget two minutes after reading them.

Ya can always go back .Sometimes a situation at hand triggers a memory and ya think ya made it up .You probably read it in Taps Tips though . The tip with the paper chum bag and rock with pull string .

So classic, though I've always used onion bags out the back of the boat or mixing spoons to flick chum to my shore fishing spot . Also when I spill a bunch of hooks, yup the magnet comes out .

Okay help me with rock bag thingie... Huh?

Put a stone at the bottom of a paper bag filled with chum .Tie a rope or string to the top ,drop down or lob  out ,give it a yank and reel in the bag with a broken bottom.

used to have access to a nice aerated pond.me and a buddy used to take the boys there when they were little.we threw catfish stripers anything we caught at the cooling lake in there, onion bag full of dog food on the bottom over night.spoiled those kids.some of the smaller ones nearly got pulled in the water.

that's they way to do it!

Okay I get it. Keeping chum in the same spot - good idea

I can see getting half a dozen of the bags prepped, including a small chip of wood tied with a string to each rock.
Now. toss them along a shore or some structure feature like a channel edge as you fin along in a float tube... Say in a 100 yard stretch. Troll a little stickbait along as you do, of course.

By the time you fin back to the first spot, the marker chip is now deployed, and the chum may have started working. You could work a line like this all day.
