Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Most of my South Carolina friends will remember when the Confederate Civil War submarine, the CSS Hunley, was discovered in Charleston.

Being the first fully submersible warship in history, it was expected that no end of remarkable things would be discovered within her hull.

But one artifact was the most noteworthy of all.

As is now known, the Hunley went down with its crew, becoming their watery grave for over a century and a half.
But even across those years, an all too familiar message was waiting to greet us.

You see, pinned to one of the crew men's shirts was a political campaign button with these words:

"Re-elect Strom Thurmond."

Some things, it seems, are eternal.

And here I thought it was going to be something about the Double Eagle that the C.O. carried as a good luck piece.  It had stopped a bullet, saving his life.

Nice story.  Just goes to show how some things never change.

Well, this is definitely a Southern joke.
Strom Thurmond was one of the longest seated Congressmen in history, in office from November 7, 1956 – January 3, 2003. I'm gonna say he holds the record.
He was also renowned for his glad-handing exploits in the early years. I remember hearing about him walking all over the state, shaking hands and camping in peoples barns. Most people of the day met him that way! He ran for President against civil rights, corralled the Congress and was a 2 star general in the Army.
He is legend in South Carolina, both loved and reviled. But, after nearly 50 seated years in Congress, well.... it seems that as along as there has been a South - 'Ol Dixiecrat himself, Strom Thurmond, was there.
