Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Checked on one of my little honey-holes this afternoon.....

This spot is less than a mile from where I will hopefully start working a night job.  I had to stop in to talk to the Sous Chef.  Once that was done, I decided on a Recon fishing trip.

Wind is light, at just a couple miles an hour.  The water in this creek is kind of murky, visibility is about 18" or less.  Lots of small clots of algae are floating and drifting with the current, with new little clots of algae rising up from the bottom here and there.  I'm not sure if it's Carp rooting around (there are some in here), turtles, fish, or just photosynthesis working and causing the much to raft upwards.

Anyways, I didn't see any fish activity, although the turtles were active, as were the geese and some ducks.  Using the 4wt fly rod, I tossed out a Gurgle-Pop with a Chironomid hanging below it.  Nothing!  I made several casts, and they all resulted in the same thing.

I went back to the car to swap out the fly rod for my UL spinning rig.  I decided to try an old stand-by, a size 0 in-line spinner.  I made several casts with that, but no hookups or bites.  I decided to try a few slower retrieves to let the spinner drop closer to the bottom.  That was the ticket!  Got a bite, with no hookup.  Next cast yielded a small 'gill.  Second cast gave me a Green Sunnie.  Third cast gave me a small, 7" long LMB.

All totaled, I landed two 'gills, three or four Green Sunnies, and the small LMB.  Also had a few fish come unbuttoned, and lots of bites that I didn't connect with.

It's only going to get better at this hole.  There are some decent LMBs in here, decent Channel Cats, and a couple Koi swimming in here, not to mention all the Green Sunnies.

Nice report Allen.....let us know how it goes in the weeks ahead.....

Really nice write up, my man.

Great report. Time well spent away from home. Have the bites gone way up or slowly coming up?

Before today, I hadn't caught any sunfish.  I haven't fished this spot since last Fall, so I don't really have anything to gauge how active the fish are.  I do know that in a month or so, I'll be tearing them up here.
