Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Thank you Greg and all. After today I can tell you I don't know how much fun I have really missed over the years not using a flyrod. The #5wt done a little bending can't imagine catching a fish on a 1 or 2wt that would be awesome. Now that I'm weened and haven't pierced any body parts I feel like I will be getting much more serious but due to the wind I had some tangles that set me back. In fact I had quit a few tangles. All I had was rubber spiders and after I used them they started sinking as did everyone I tied on guess they were cheappies. Greg I will get to Cabala's and restock next time I get out that way.

Dick just wait til you hook a 5or6 pound bass or a monster carp and that little nub we call a handle on that direct drive reel beats your knuckles to heck,i have even caught a big pike that grabbed the 6 inch gill i had on and never let go.

Thanks Jim I didn't even think about that.

What Jim just said that happend's to me pretty often. Hook a nice Gill and all you see next a huge swirl and your line is just ripping out, I lost 7 flies already cause of that and with  4-lb line it just snap's. The Bass are too big. Forgot to ask what combo is that?

Hopefully if that happens it will be the ride of my life. Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.

Dick, That is just AWESOME!!!!!!! Becareful though had a guy tell me I would use a fly-rod only!!!!!! I told him he was crazy, but alas, he called it right!!!!!!!!  Enjoy the 5 wt. , maybe next year you will be ready to GRADUATE to the LIGHTER RODS!!!!!!! I have a 4, 5, 6 and 8 weight that haven't seen the light of day in years!!!!!!!  The 6 weight will be getting out going for WIPERS, later in summer!!!!!

GREAT DAY OF FISHING FOR YOU and GREAT FAMILY VIEWING!!!!!! Thanks for SHARING THAT MOMENT!!!!!!

Thank you for all the info. I won't entirely rely on the fly rod but it will get used more often.

Nice gills Dick!

I used spiders too with great success, but the next time I tried them I couldn't get any to float. Let us know if you find some that stay on top for you. I'm gonna start a thread about it too in case you care to peruse.

Craig that was my first outing with the fly rod. I don't have any flies yet but had a few cheap rubber spiders that I used with my spinning gear but after a short while they no longer floated they started to sink. I do believe they were Betts. Greg gave me a list of flies to try so next time I get to Cabela's I should be stocked up. Thank you for the reply maybe next time I'll know of some good rubber spiders. The Gills are from my pond they finally started bedding and all were released.

Good going Dick. You will get the hang of casting into the wind and usually you don't need to cast all that far for gills. When it's windy try to keep your forward cast low and power it down toward the water.

Thank you all information is appreciated. It was a blast and will be doing more of it.

Hello Dick, where did you catch the gills at, in your pond? Looks like a lot of fun!!

Terry I got the Gills from my pond. I found a fly rodI bought way back when and forgot about it in the barn and tried it out. I know I can do better when I learn how to use it. Call me on my cell for the day you what to come to the cottage to fish I'll have the coffee on.
