Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Ever see those guys on tv using baitcast reels throwing spinner baits like they weight a half a pound? The lure goes an easy 100 feet..effortlessly.

Me..I get a baitcast reel, and if I am not throwing a weighted worm, it either doesn't go very far..or it birdnests when I really push it.

I had a Procaster 2 many years ago and it was fine..but the three or four ohers I have had were like fishing with a Penn 109. Is it just me, or what?

Nope, I can't use a baitcast reel at all. And........I can't find a spincast reel that works more than a few months. They don't make things like they use to.

i love my baitcasters.. i have 6 of them but i only use them for bass fishing.. the great thing about baitcasters is the amount of line they bring in so quickly.. that makes a difference if your out fishing most of the day ...

BLEGILL SHARON.. have you tried any of the mitchell reels .. i am in the process of converting all my gill and crappie poles to all mitchells.. i have allways used the little shimano uls reels for  years but i switched to mitchell avochets.. i have been so pleased with these reels.. so very smooth made of metal and very very durable.. i fish atleast 3 times a week and these reels have really held up...

are they spincast or baitcast reels?

if youre refering to "push button" style reels as spincasts, ive had great experience with zebco deltas, omegas and the new z02 pro.

The push button and the trigger release reels are spincast reels

I am the opposite of most people. I can throw a baitcast all day no problems, a spinning reel on the other hand is my nightmare. 2012 is my year to master a spinning reel. the problem most people have with baitcast reels are they are not setup proper.

I can throw a baitcast all day long too. My problem is finding one that can cast lighter lures. You watch thse guys on tv sling a spinnerbait 125 feet. Trying it yourself makes a mess.

SHARON .. THEY ARE SPINCAST REELS (OPEN FACE) THEY COME IN THREE SIZES.. I GET THE SMALLEST FOR PANFISH.. YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO BUY THEM AT ANY PLACE THAT SELLS REELS. THEY RUN ABOUT 30 DOLLARS THEY ARE KINDA GOLDISH COPPER COLOR.. BUT I THINK YOU WOULD BE PLEASED WITH THEM..

If they are open face, wouldn't they get just as tangled up as the baitcast reels?

Bait casters are the ultimate fishing reels. They usually have a couple ways to help eliminate the birdnests centrifugal brake with some having an extra magnetic brake. There is no way to completely eliminate it and when you think you do and then cast into the wind you will see different. The best way is to use it you will have an adjustment on the side. With the bait on that your going to us turn the knob counterclockwise till the bait just starts to move. The rest of the adjustment will be with the magnets I always start with the highest # and work my way down. The lesser the # the farther you will be able to cast it, but beware that's when most of your backlashes occur but with practice you will excel at it. If you use them you'll see there is no sweeter drag or smoother running reels made then the bait caster. But lets be serious the reel was not made for pan fishing with light lures. It was not made to cast 1/32 oz or even 1/8 oz lures. It was made to chunck out bass lures and they do a great job. I have numerous bait casters and they work well with what they are intended to do. With lots of practice you may be able to cast a little smaller lure but not much smaller. So for what it's worth they are truly great reel but not intended for small lures.

Today, the arrogant bass fishing dude who came over to fish where I was had a Skitt Reese rod and what looked like a Daiwa Zillion reel. expensive stuff.

he was casting a plastic crawfish with no weight on it. I was shocked.

I dontthink I have a baitcaster that can do that.

Some of the plastic crayfish are heavy enough for a bait caster. Baitcasters have come a long ways and getting better everyday. They were not intended for UL baits.
